Map lovers, may I recommend East Riddlesden Hall? They have an excellent 17th C map of Canaan with annotations from the Old Testament. And they let me use a special torch to read it all.

Wandering round Sir Walter Scott's house and I realised that my entire knowledge of the French and English royal families of, say, 1600 - 1750, is anchored around one woman, Henriette d'Angleterre. A win for feminism I think.

I bought a Merton College Oxford jumper for the express purpose of wearing to medical appointments. Consultants have frequently taken me more seriously after I've mentioned studying there.

If one part suffers, the other parts suffer with it: An update on the SCM Disability Campaigns Group.

"In SCM we have many disabled members, as well as members who are carers. We are also, as a movement, inspired to work for social justice. To this end, we recently created a Disability Rights Campaign group. Our original aim for the group was to campaign against the PIP and Universal Credit bill that was proposed to significantly reduce support available to disabled people, but I hope that we can continue to work as a group to support each other and to work on other causes as they come up." "Over the last few months, before the now-renamed Universal Credit bill was passed, we worked together to write two open letters, to Liz Kendall (Secretary of State for Work and Pensions) and Rachel Reeves (Chancellor of the Exchequer). We explained our concerns about the Green Paper released in advance of the bill, and our objections to the proposed bill itself, in both practical and faith-based terms. We also shared some personal stories from members regarding how the proposed cuts would affect us." We are glad that the small part we played in the overall campaign against the cuts has contributed to the changes to PIP being removed from the bill and set to be reviewed. However, we are disappointed and concerned that the cuts for new disabled claimants of Universal Credit were passed, as this will seriously impact some of the most vulnerable disabled people and families in our society. Personally, I’m very glad that we have been able to bring this campaign group together, and I hope we will continue to live out our faith through working to support each other and disabled people more generally. Welfare reform bill aka terrifying and unfair cuts for disabled ppl passed to committee stage, and on the 1st of Disability Pride Month no less. Possibly with concessions on the 4 point rule, but none of that is actually on paper, just promised. Aaaarghhhhhhh.
