I bought a Merton College Oxford jumper for the express purpose of wearing to medical appointments. Consultants have frequently taken me more seriously after I've mentioned studying there.

If one part suffers, the other parts suffer with it: An update on the SCM Disability Campaigns Group.

"In SCM we have many disabled members, as well as members who are carers. We are also, as a movement, inspired to work for social justice. To this end, we recently created a Disability Rights Campaign group. Our original aim for the group was to campaign against the PIP and Universal Credit bill that was proposed to significantly reduce support available to disabled people, but I hope that we can continue to work as a group to support each other and to work on other causes as they come up." "Over the last few months, before the now-renamed Universal Credit bill was passed, we worked together to write two open letters, to Liz Kendall (Secretary of State for Work and Pensions) and Rachel Reeves (Chancellor of the Exchequer). We explained our concerns about the Green Paper released in advance of the bill, and our objections to the proposed bill itself, in both practical and faith-based terms. We also shared some personal stories from members regarding how the proposed cuts would affect us." We are glad that the small part we played in the overall campaign against the cuts has contributed to the changes to PIP being removed from the bill and set to be reviewed. However, we are disappointed and concerned that the cuts for new disabled claimants of Universal Credit were passed, as this will seriously impact some of the most vulnerable disabled people and families in our society. Personally, I’m very glad that we have been able to bring this campaign group together, and I hope we will continue to live out our faith through working to support each other and disabled people more generally. What a wonderful moment in #Synod .The terrible "Issues in Human Sexuality" document has been consigned to the recycling bin with huge support across the Synod, in all Houses and constituencies. Glimmers of hope.

If I didn't already have a job next year I'd definitely be applying - SCM is a wonderful organisation and the faith in action worker will do great work supporting progressive Christian students in the UK

Welfare reform bill aka terrifying and unfair cuts for disabled ppl passed to committee stage, and on the 1st of Disability Pride Month no less. Possibly with concessions on the 4 point rule, but none of that is actually on paper, just promised. Aaaarghhhhhhh.

Just finished These Happy Golden Years, which produced a strange mix of warm nostalgia and "what in the colonial mindset were they thinking?!"

Finishing my degree means lying in my childhood bedroom reading old story books. Possibly for longer than intended because the stairlift is playing up, but I'm cool with that

Remote work accommodations are something disabled people have needed for decades

Covid showed us it’s possible, but ableism & discrimination took it away
