I was up there at that time too, as a student at Newcastle Uni.
My then girlfriend (now my wife for 44 years) lived close to Corbridge so we would go there often.
Her mother lived for 50 years up in Northumberland.

I have to agree that the English are guilty of many things, spelling maybe one of them.
However,we find it strange that you say, “he dove off the pier” (we would say, “he dived off the pier”) but I believe ‘dove’ is technically the correct for the past tense.

60 - 75% of those with a University degree voted to remain in the EU.
Conversely, approx 70% of those with no qualifications or only GCSE’s (the UK basic school national exams) voted to leave.
