The pieces are already there: in the relationships across our community, in the diverse lived experiences of our families, and in the teachers who fight for our kids every single day.

Schools where teachers are treated like the dedicated and hardworking professionals they are, where parents' voices are actually heard, and where students help shape their own education.

But here's what I do know: together, we can build something better. We can have schools that see our kids as whole human beings, not just test scores.

Right now, we're teaching our kids that their voices don't matter and that ideologues in Austin know what's better for our kids than we do.

What's happening in HISD right now is the opposite of that. We have an unelected board making decisions about our children while the people we actually voted for are forced to sit on the sidelines.

That's why I know real leadership isn't about having all the answers— it's about listening to people and working together to find solutions.

HISD is seeing larger enrollment declines since the state takeover began HISD's New Education System schools have reported higher rates of student enrollment declines during the first two years of the state takeover, data shows.

"The data shows that HISD’s enrollment was declining by an average of about 2% each year in the five years prior to the state takeover in June 2023. Since then, the district’s student enrollment has declined by about 4% each year, largely driven by enrollment declines at the 130 NES campuses."
