#FossilFriday: Asteroceras obtusum, a classic Lower Lias ammonite from Lyme Regis. This specimen belonged to Manchester geologist John Eddowes Bowman (1785–1841) and was probably purchased from #MaryAnning when he visited Lyme in August 1841. It is now in the collections @morethanadodo.bsky.social

Of course it was this I particularly wanted to see again: the Anning’s 1811-12 ichthyosaur, first described in a paper read 211 years ago today at a meeting of the Royal Society. It changed hands several times before it was acquired by the British Museum at auction in 1819.

Puffins are social, so to attract them to Maine's rocky islands, National Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program put out decoys to attract real birds.

This puffin is trying to fit in with his new friend by standing on one leg.

Seabird peer-pressure can be intense.
