Leigh cycle lane, still not complete but so close. Obviously couldn't photograph them but two 7-8 year old girls scooting down it with their mum, huge smiles on their faces.
Because they felt safe

Think itโs because thereโs going to be a signalised pedestrian crossing there, so presumably to minimise the crossing distance for pedestrians?
02.07.2025 23:15 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0There are places that have achieved Vision Zero. Oslo is one of them. Floating bus stops are part of the solution, not the problem. Stop making vulnerable road users fight over scraps of space while prioritizing the mode of transport that kills most.

I'm a disabled person and an academic focusing on sustainable transport and disability justice.
I wrote this piece last year on bus stop bypasses.

We have also submitted written evidence today. We are extremely concerned about these exclusionary amendments which would make comprehensive safe cycling for children, families & many disabled people impossible.

Bus stop bypasses (floating bus stops) are being discussed
Well designed bus stop bypasses are the best option in some places for pan-impairment #ActiveTravel and public transport #accessibility. Here's why:

As promised, my written evidence is now on the @cityinfinity.bsky.social website blog. It has also been acknowledged by Parliamentary support.
I hope you understand why I have unusually disabled replies.

Right I'm so pissed off that we've got London MPs trying to hijack the Local Buses Bill (which is supposed to be about STUFF OUTSIDE LONDON for a change) to try to ban London / all floating bus stops (utter nonsense), that I've stayed up late writing evidence for the committee. Join me! Link โฌ๏ธ

It should be boring but important stuff about running bus services with a model that suits each area.

We can allow history to repeat itself, and powerful interests to shape our streets in one way.
Or we can remember that cities are places where walking, cycling and public transport should be prioritised.

Purple link on map between Deansgateโs Liverpool Rd junction and the junction of Middlewood St / East Ordsall Lane
Build this little missing purple bit and youโve connected the city centre to the quays
10.05.2025 13:31 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Good to see that the new Deansgate / Quay St junction gives pedestrians and cycles 2 stages in every full cycle of the lights, so even though I missed this first green light letting pedestrians cross, it was only 25 seconds before another green light ๐ฆ
03.04.2025 21:26 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1Having almost been hit by a taxi driving on the wrong side of a traffic island while crossing here,itโs good to see the pedestrian improvements.
Having actually been hit by a car here while cycling (thankfully unhurt) the bike aspects are really disappointing given the space available.
Would really love to see these expanded to Swinton.
The idea of having satellite zones in places with new infrastructure such as Rochdale is also interesting.
4.3 ยฃ1.66million of this revenue funding will enable the continued development of GM's walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure scheme pipeline. The detail of the distribution of this funding across GM is shown in the table below. Authority Scheme Name/s ยฃ000's Bolton Bolton Town Centre West/Farnworth Town Centre East-West Links 228 Bury Bury Town Centre 100 Manchester City Centre Movement Strategy/Whitwort Street/Wythenshawe Active Trave 200 Oldham Bee Network Connectivity/Audit Development 175 Rochdale Hollin Lane / Middleton Road 100 Salford Islington Active Neighbourhood 206 Stockport High Lane to Stepping Hill/Accessibility Improvements/Heaton Chapel Active Neighbourhood 160 Tameside lowson Road, Hyde/Hurst Brook Activ leighbourhoo 70 Wigan addle Junction Links/ Ashton Town Centre Study Vest of Leigh Additional Route 300 GM-Wide Cycle Hire Expansion Total 120 1,659
4.4 In addition, a further ยฃ1.74million of GM's Capability revenue funding is to be used to deliver centrally coordinated activities associated with the promotion, analysis, management and enablement of active travel across Greater Manchester. Managed and led by TiGM, these initiatives are grouped as shown in the table below. Initiative ยฃ000's Grants for Workplaces, Schools, Communities 535 Awareness, Engagement and Participation Campaigns 310 Monitoring and Evaluation (Data and Evidence Collection) 275 Cycle /Loan / Share / Training 255 Network Audit / Wayfinding 151 Programme Management 110 Cycling, Wheeling, and Walking to School Programme 100 Total 1,736
Hereโs an example of how Greater Manchester used their 2023/24 revenue funding allocation
22.03.2025 21:21 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0National formula - The capability ratings are used to calculate funding allocations for local authorities for integrated settlements. This includes revenue funding to local authorities to boost technical capability to deliver high quality schemes as well as capital to develop and construct schemes. Ratings are used to guide indicative allocations for active travel funding. Higher rated authorities are eligible to access more funding, ensuring that investment is appropriate to the level of capability. Allocations are based on population level and capability level, with more favourable weightings for lower levels of capability for revenue funding in order to accelerate capability building, as follows: Funding weighting by Capability Rating Level 1 = (CDEL) 1 x population / (RDEL) 1.5 x population Level 2 = (CDEL) 2 x population / (RDEL) 2 x population Level 3 = (CDEL) 3 x population / (RDEL) 3 x population
Now theyโve combined it into one overall pot of money distributed to local authorities following a formula
22.03.2025 21:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thereโs a bit more of an explanation of the sorts of things the revenue funding can be used on here from when the active travel fund (capital) and active travel capability fund (revenue)

February cycle count totals for the years 2017 to 2025, by direction. 2025 shows a slight increase on 2024, but this is misleading because 2024 was a leap year. 2025 has the highest counts for any year.
A cumulative chart showing cycle counts for 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The 2025 count is in first place for most of the month.
February 2025 has been a good one for the Oxford Road Cycleway. For the first time in February, over 6,000 cyclists were recorded in a day and over 3,000 northbound (25 Feb). Factoring in last February's extra day, we saw 7% growth overall, and new monthly records in either direction.

You're in. Paying for journeys on public transport is easy with Express Mode for Apple Pay. There's no need for Face ID or Touch ID. Just hold your iPhone or Apple Watch to the card reader and go.
No power? No problem. Keep travelling up to five hours after the red Power Reserve icon appears.
Where can I use Express Mode today to travel? UK transport operators that support Express Mode: โข Transport for London โข Arriva UK Bus (available nationally) โข First Bus (available nationally) โข Go North East โข East Yorkshire Buses โข Go North West โข konectbus โข Norwich Park & Ride โข Hedingham & Chambers โข Oxford Bus Company โข The Airline (Oxford - London Heathrow & Gatwick airport coach services) โข Thames Travel โข Carousel โข Brighton & Hove Buses โข Metrobus โข morebus โข Bluestar โข Unilink โข UniBUS, the bus for Bournemouth University โข Salisbury Reds โข Southern Vectis โข Swindon's Bus Company โข Damory โข Go Cornwall Bus โข Plymouth City Bus

Would speed up bus boarding and means people can still use bus/tram if theyโre unfortunate enough to run out of battery. TfL and many other UK operators already offer this
