I hope that Lewisham council lends full support for this motion put forward by Green Cllrs @liamshrivastava.bsky.social and @tamhauyu.bsky.social that will see the council observing international law and divest in companies complicit in war crimes and genocide committed in Gaza and the West bank

It would be a better use of your time reckoning with why your right-wing Party is increasingly unpopular, hated and makes millions of people's lives worse. I did my shift, trying to reverse that, trying to make the best change I thought I could. It was more time and more of me than they deserved.

On LBC @zoejardiniere.bsky.social lists 3 previous instances where military aircraft have been targeted by campaigners in order to prevent them being used in war crimes, and she describes the govt banning Palestine Action as terrorists as an abuse of state power.

The Labour party previously subjected another Lewisham councillor, Hau-Yu Tam, to a disciplinary proceeding accusing her of organising a protest at a council meeting in November 2023, which she denies. The council had refused to discuss a motion submitted by Tam to support a ceasefire in Gaza. Tam was given a formal warning despite finding that she did not organise a protest. She told Novara Media that it had a "chilling effect" on dissent among local Labour councillors which had been building at the time.

"I think because I got suspended, first of all it had an impact on my voice but collectively it had a chilling effect on how people were willing to speak up. Some who were on the fence stopped speaking completely and some who were more strategic became more canny." Tam left Labour in July 2024 and sat as an independent socialist councillor before joining the Green party.

It's not just me @lewishamlabour.bsky.social targeted. My @lewishamgreenparty.bsky.social colleague @tamhauyu.bsky.social was falsely accused of organising a Palestine protest and suspended by the party.

This is how Labour shamefully treats those speaking out against genocide.

Lewisham Labour is running scared. Against 53 Labour councillors in Lewisham, I am the sole opposition councillor and proudly represent the Greens. Tonight I learned that Lewisham Labour has blocked me from being appointed to any scrutiny committee. Read that again: the only councillor who does not have a formal voice in Lewisham's scrutiny process is the lone Green! Scrutiny acts as the vital counterweight to the Executive (i.e., Mayor/Leader & Cabinet), being a critical friend to the decisions of the Frontbench. Although their autocratic decision is constitutional—itself a problem—it is obviously highly anti-democratic and goes against principles of basic equality and natural justice. It is bad for robust policymaking and bad for Lewisham residents. Here you see the institutionalized discrimination and duplicity that pump the heart of the Labour Party. They silence pro-welfare, pro-migrant, pro-Palestine, pro-justice socialist voices who do not sing unthinkingly to their hymn sheet Lewisham Labour is scared because the tearing apart of both 'main' parties at local elections last week—the lowest joint vote share since Labour's founding—shows they are losing! Rather than listen to their electorate, Labour has no ideas and no courage other than to call for reform and strike down their opposition. But then why wouldn't they, when they have so much experience doing that to the global working class every single day? Cllr TAM Hau-Yu 06.05.25
