The fact that this is happening at Brown, historically one of the most queer-friendly universities in the nation, is even more distressing. My husband is a Brown alum and deeply hurt and angered by this. It definitely affects how we plan on engaging with Brown in the future.

I wish I had that same optimism, but if anything the past 9 years have taught me that there are vast swaths of our population that are completely ok with outright racism, violence, lawlessness, and racism as long as they see it happening to “other people.” I am pessimisticly optimistic, as it were.

I don’t know if this means anything bigger or if it means that Trump’s grip on the GOP is beginning to weaken.
