We the people are the job creators who keep showing up and making America great right now!

If you were looking at human genomes trying to divide people into groups based on genetic differences, you wouldn’t likely come up with the divisions we have, because they’re based on geography and history, not biology. Which is the opposite of them having biological reality.

This. Even though Trump's illegal EO is prospective only, if the constitutional principle is compromised what keeps them from applying it to everyone? Were your grandparents undocumented? Ok, your parents aren't citizens, so they must be undocumented too. Surprise, you're stateless, here's ICE!

There is no hell deep enough to contain the people involved with this

Just because racism is rarely the *only* factor in the history of American discriminatory practices doesn't mean it hasn't consistently been a meaningful and impactful one. Redlining is one such example where that outsized impact is clear. (/rant, sources in images)

Concluding: redlining explicitly (but not exclusively) discriminated on the basis race, and that discrimination was anti-white. Doesn't mean white folks didn't get caught up - it just means relatively higher rates of non-white folks were. That has had systemic, racist generational consequences. (6)

The impact of these extra barriers to property ownership for non-white folks persists. The distorted demographics of redlined areas today vs those that were not redlined shows as much. See the attached charts showing redlined area demographics in 2017 and nationwide trends. (5)

These were the sorts of gov't and private guidelines that the folks drawing up redlining maps at the adjacent Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) agency would consider in writing up their maps. So, yes, redlining was explicitly discriminatory in a way that was extra anti-white! (4)

Even before the FHA existed, large realty organizations like the National Association of Realtors had official guidance to restrict service to non-white folks in addition to their other recommendations. (3)

They even recommended restrictive covenants to avoid race-mixing in neighborhoods. To reiterate, while redlining was not *just* racially discriminatory, it certainly WAS racially discriminatory. (2)

Was redlining *only* about racism? No!

Was racism explicitly written into the guidance for redliners, making policy even worse for non-white folks? 100% YES!

The FHA listed race mixing in communities and the presence of β€œinharmonious racial groups” as reason enough to deny credit in 1938. (1)

my humble opinion is that if your job is to manage risk and make big decisions about markets and you screw up your judgement this badly you should be disqualified from ever managing money and also shunned completely from speaking on the subject in public again

it’s weird that we’re staring down the second unprecedented economic catastrophe in five years and instead of a novel coronavirus that will go on to kill millions of people this one is just β€œno one was willing to tell him no”

Tactically, this seems like a fantastic time for institutions (law firms, universities) and individuals (Repubs in Congress) who want to stand up to Trump.

He's openly cratering the economy, the weakness of Elon's ability to buy elections was just revealed in Wisconsin. The emperor has no clothes.

very excited to see what this does to the lives and livelhoods of my friends and family. also excited to live through, what, the third economic collapse that is the direct product of republican governance?

Maybe everyone can see it now, but the world's richest people have tanked it all to restock assets and get liquid after years of illegally playing with funny money. They used "the wokeness" as a cudgel and it worked. The next Disney princess WILL be white, as we all eat beans under the highway.

I, for one, welcome the β€œabundance” fight. It shows the left can fight Trumpism while wrestling with how we can be better than we’ve been.

I have no interest in β€œactually the government has been doing great” liberalism.

Modern Republican politics are rooted in spite and any competent opposition party should be ready and willing to play hard ball back. I hope your company goes bankrupt, you big rich baby.

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words β€œI lived it. I lived it. I lived it.”

She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again.

This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

I think the amazing thing in the US is that people forget that law is willed into being by the people as they comply with it on a daily basis. It does not exist on its own. It is not like the laws of physics. It is a merely human thing
