Yes, some people's legacies are complicated. For example, Watson. After all, though he was racist, don't forget his other traits. For example, he was also sexist. And also anti-semitic. And a data / idea thief. So let's not forget all the different facets.

I’m going to regret asking this, but… what mechanism are people proposing whereby AI will “end scarcity”?

This feels like literal underpants gnomes thinking, and as I never tire of pointing out, it’s being driven by a lot of the same actual people

False: Any real communist will happily spend six hours explaining why this isn’t true.

A thing about AI in higher ed right now is that half of us are scrambling to deal with the implosion of our information environment that broke reading/writing/source verification, while the other half is trying to achieve a massive institutional buy-in of the very thing that's causing the implosion

The absolute collapse of their stupid AI ruse — hopefully followed by a massive wave of tech regulation and imprisoning the politicians who enabled this — cannot come soon enough.

And yes, I know our history does not give a lot of reasons for optimism.

But just accepting that guarantees nothing better will happen.

Things DO sometimes improve, but they only do when ppl reject pessimism and push for that better outcome.

And lose a lot! But all the wins come from trying.

And, wherever possible, let Cook County or the state AG prosecute the cases. I’m sure these abuses violate state laws too.

That way no future MAGA-type President can vice-signal by pardoning them, and makes it harder for a collaborationist SCOTUS.

There had better be trials. And not just for the low-level thugs carrying out these orders, but for everyone up the chain of command.

If we get past this, the solution isn’t to pretend it never happened and invite Stephen Miller to Harvard’s Institute of Politics.

It’s trials w real punishments.

AI is killing people. We don't have to let companies hawking these products embed them in everything. If you work at a college, your students are already struggling with mental health, and you want to give them this?

These people are viscerally terrified of the possibility that someone else might be able to make them feel bad about something because they find that a deeply disempowering sensation, and I think a lot of their specific political stances are actually *downstream* of this.

The future being pushed by both AI boosters and educational censors is one where access to information is tightly controlled. Children will not be allowed to read certain books or learn certain narratives. “Research” will be performed only through one of a select few artificial intelligence tools owned by AI giants which are uniformly aligned behind the Trump administration and which have gone to the ends of the earth to prevent their black box machines from spitting out “woke” answers lest they catch the ire of the administration. School boards and library boards, forced to comply with increasingly restrictive laws, funding cuts, and the threat of being defunded entirely, leap at the chance to be considered forward looking by embracing AI tools, or apply for grants from government groups like the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is increasingly giving out grants specifically to AI projects.

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc

Family speaks out after death of man deported by ICE in vegetative state Randall Alberto Gamboa Esquivel’s family alleges negligence and inhumane treatment

ICE deported him anyways.

They literally put a man who was at death’s door on a plane to Costa Rica.

Doctors there found he had encephalopathy, rhabdomyolysis and the inability to eat on his own.

What happened to him in ICE custody to cause this?

He died a few weeks after deportation:

More people have died in ICE custody in last 9 months than in the entire prior 4 years.

We hear of a few, but most barely make the news.

Cases like Randall Alberto Gamboa Esquivel.

He was in perfect health when ICE detained him.

He disappeared in June & by August was in a vegetative state.

Treating anti-Blackness as beside the point, as not disqualifying, as something to be overlooked, I’d argue, is partially how we got here.

Poster titled BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS, with a circle/slash crossing out the EAA 2026 Athens logo.

This is an urgent call for all members of the archaeological community to join this boycott.

Do not submit a session to the EAA until Eszter Banffy steps down as president of the EAA after her anti-democratic actions. There has been a concerted campaign of intimidation against individual members of the board, including large numbers of threatening and defamatory emails and individual participants, groups, and student volunteers have been intimidated. Even after close documentation of her shameful autocratic actions in the press and on social media, she refuses to step down. We cannot let this happen, this is not what we stand for as a community.

Many departments and institutions already decided not to participate and submit sessions after it has become clear that the EAA has not resolved its issues. Do not submit a session until Banffy steps down. If you have already submitted a session, retract it.

BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS 2026 🏺

This is not a BTC action but we are helping to disseminate this call, as the president of the EAA has shown great willingness for reprisals.

Please distribute widely, particularly to offline colleagues.

lots of people can't wear masks; widespread mask use mitigates risks for them. air filtration means lowering the viral load in case you're not wearing a mask briefly, or if the mask fit isn't perfect. testing helps identify cases

if i get sick, i want it to be because like a dozen things went wrong

Every single time they roll out this, “we need to learn to FORGIVE” line, in their bodies, in this context, I suspect that more than a few voters hear that echo. Personally, i would stop saying it.

But, again, what do I know.

Another thing (and so they should consider leaving me alone) is that this “we need to forgive people for what they said in the past to grow the party” owes a significant discursive debt to the MeToo backlash that has unilaterally sold the idea that “woke feminism” went too far.

To my mind, not only is this a direct attack by a UC central admin content to capitulate and emulate the federal position that arrived via extortion letter, it is part of a much larger plan, congruent with UC central admin, of weakening and eliminating faculty governance and power.
