Research discovery: certain proteins may be responsible for dementia in middle age, and their identification could make it easier to diagnose and treat the disease.
Diseases affected: Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)
Key findings: the proteins the team identified show evidence of changes in composition, suggesting problems with RNA regulation and defects that affect connections in the brain.
What's next? Further study of these proteins could lead to specific biomarkers for catching FTD early on.
Frontotemporal Dementia (#FTD) is the most common form of dementia to affect people under 60. Researchers @ucsfmac.bsky.social have recently made discoveries about the proteins involved, which could be the first specific markers to detect FTD in living patients. buff.ly/xocjO4E

A California judge got a devastating brain diagnosis. But it unlocked an extraordinary skill
Judge Dylan Sullivan developed an unexpected talent after she was forced to retire in her 50s because of a diagnosis of early dementia.
When words failed, art emerged. After being diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia, former judge Dylan Sullivan discovered an unexpected talent for drawing. Her story highlights the brainβs resilience and the power of creativity. www.sfchronicle.com/health/artic...

Former El Dorado County judge turns to art after aphasia diagnosis
When Dylan Sullivan picks up her pencil, every point, every line and every shape is made with mathematical precision.
"[PPA] ... tends to attack circuits in the front of the brain that are responsible for, on the left side, language and, on the right side, social skills," said Dr. Bruce Miller, Director of the UCSF MAC and Founding Director of the Global Brain Health Institute at UCSF. www.kcra.com/article/form...

Aging activates escape of the silent X chromosome in the female mouse hippocampus
Aging activates the silent X chromosome, increasing escape expression, and potentially cognitive resilience, in the female mouse.
"We could all use a little more X!" Thrilled our new study is out. Aging "wakes up" the silent X chromosome in the female brain - and this contributes cognitive resilience. Spearheaded by @margaretgadek.bsky.social in Science Advances. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
