I think it's the second thing more than the first. A sense of "mattering."

I often think we're a lot more susceptible to this in the US because we're so many of us think we're going to be rich, famous, and respected. That makes being average seem unimportant and dull.

Exactly. I did my undergrad honors thesis on Jim Jones, David Koresh, Shoko Asahara, and their followers. It's the sense of community and importance that make it so hard to unplug.

But I don't think it's about correcting things factually. These beliefs give them a sense of importance, a sense that they're seeing the secret truth and that ability makes them special.

If that is corrected, that is being taken away.

I think that's because this isn't something therapy can really help. It's something that has to be replaced.
