Mamdani wants to spend "$20 million per year to ensure that every school can have an Open Street," but what I'm really hoping is that he not just funds open streets but funds building them out with greenery and other permanent features. @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social

I am insistent that the Maguire Method is an excellent system/philosophy for sharpening edge tools and when the Philadelphia community hand tool woodshop opens everyone will have to lean it! Luckily I got @phillyjames.bsky.social in the shop to learn before he tried hollow grinding or a microbevel

So infuriating. The solution obviously is to get rid of those roads and their air and noise pollution, then build even more housing there

Is it the Veritas β€œminiature” router plane you’re talking about? Mine has a 1/4” blade and no depth control, so I’ve had a hard time getting a consistent depth cut with it, but haven’t used it much yet. The level of precision needed is daunting for everything to friction fit!

Oh wow interesting! Would those be too hard to cut with a saw? Which router plane? I have the large LN one and the small Veritas one which I use for hinges. And what about the crossgrain rabbets on the end? Rabbet plane for that? Or saw and split + router plane?

The pieces are short enough a plow plane fence could probably reach the middle of them, and never done anything like this before which is why I ask

This reminds me… starting a Dutch tool chest soon and going to use your blog post to fit the interior. For all those plane cubbies and β€œkey” pieces that fit together with small rabbets and dados do you saw all the joints, or plane some of them?

This is the first confirmed death of a Philly Bike Action member due to traffic violence. Which makes it all the more enraging that despite advocacy efforts, Fairmount Park Conservancy decided to preserve Belmont Ave in its new master plan as a huge scar through the park

Relatedly, not being allowed to use a calculator during first semester of calculus was so great tbh. That was the only time in my entire life before or since that I was good and fast at doing math in my head. I think this has broader implications

What about her absolute failure and cowardice as leader of the progressive caucus during the Biden administration, and especially during the build back better saga?

Eating this ultraprocessed food may be good for you and the planet, experts say | CNN Plant-based meats have been viewed at times as ultraprocessed and possibly unhealthy. But some experts believe they deserve a second look.

This has always been clear: plant-based meat alternatives are better for the planet and, at least compared to red meat, better for your health. That this is not widely accepted is the product of meat industry disinfo, science illiteracy, and some very stupid journalists.

If a state can re-open a damaged highway in less than two weeks by declaring an emergency, there's no reason a city can't install a massive network of protected bike lanes by declaring a climate emergency or a public safety emergency. It's all a matter of who and what elected officials think matter.

Virginia activist charged with vandalism after drawing crosswalk at intersection Charlottesville safety campaigner used chalk to draw crossing near intersection where woman was fatally hit by car

One of the best things about guerrilla interventions like this is that they prove that cities can act fast *when they want to.* A man used spray chalk to mark a crosswalk on a street. The city responded almost immediately and covered it up with black paint to restore the status quo.
