Do cows compete with humans for food?
YouTube video by Crystal Heath Do cows compete with humans for food?

Do cows compete with humans for food?

750 million acres of land are tied to beef cattle production, yet the arable cropland used for cows (40 million acres) could provide protein for 234 million people per year if used for human-edible crops.

What Switzerland’s new welfare labels mean for food producers Switzerland now requires labels on meat, eggs & dairy from animals subjected to painful procedures. Here’s what the law means for producers and consumers.

Switzerland has the best animal welfare labels I've seen. Instead of meaningless welfare-washing, they just list the painful procedures the animal was subjected to without painkillers, like castration, force-feeding, or beak-cutting. This should be the law everywhere. tinyurl.com/yfhf3843

I need you to know that "Punch" is in primate laboratories all over the world.

What do I mean by this? I spent two years as a caretaker for 500+ macaques at the UW-Madison's Harlow Primate Lab. Caring for rejected newborn macaques, like Punch, was one of the most gut-wrenching parts of the job. ⬇️

The Trump admin. is taking the first step in selling oil and gas leases in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, calling for companies to identify places there where they'd like to drill.

New from me: The Colorado River is drying up & the Western US' water crisis is fueling bitter disputes among the states that share it. Yet the obvious solution to the crisis (raising fewer cows in the desert) gets almost no air time. A glaring case of agricultural exceptionalism.

Experts React to PETA’s White Paper on an Egg Industry Scam | PETA Here’s how leading experts responded to our eye-opening white paper on an egg industry scam.

My endorsement of the new White Paper by @PETA:

“Devastating. In stunning detail, this report demolishes once and for all the myth that raising hens in ‘cage-free’ environments offers ethically meaningful advantages over other forms of confinement."

Colorado High Schoolers Invent a Thermal AI Dashcam to Reduce Collisions with Deer A group of STEM students in Denver has invented a device that uses artificial intelligence to detect wildlife and warn approaching drivers.

In the U.S., vehicle collisions kill over 1 million animals *every day*. Thermal AI dashcams that detect animals ahead and alert drivers could be a massive lifesaver, for animals and humans. Hopefully these will soon be a standard safety feature in every car! www.outdoorlife.com/conservation...

Interesting new study about meat consumption in romantic partners. If one partner eats more meat and the other eats less, the flexitarian is more likely to be pressured to eat more meat (as opposed to the meat-lover being pressured into eating less) due to cultural norms.

After leaving WHO, Trump officials propose more expensive replacement to duplicate it HHS proposes spending $2 billion a year to re-create systems the U.S. accessed through the WHO at a fraction of the cost, according to officials briefed on the matter.

🚨 WaPo scoop: You've heard of Trump's "board of peace."

Now HHS wants to build its own World Health Organization that will cost exponentially more than the U.S.'s contribution to the WHO.

What the Foodies Get Wrong About Food Reform Telling people to eat more home-cooked meals and start gardening isn’t a realistic prescription for widespread change.

"Improving the American food system further will require engaging, improving, and fairly distributing modern agriculture’s productivity, not tossing it on the compost heap."

Most animal 'aquaculture' is just a euphemism for 'underwater factory farms'. The conditions are so bad that many millions of animals die before reaching slaughter. Great that Animal Equality are continuing to shed light on this: animalequality.org.uk/news/2026/02...
