I Think It's Bad to Shoot at Starving Kids Perhaps controversially.

"I think it’s a pointless exercise that needlessly derails a simple truth that should horrify all of us: the Israeli military is literally shooting and killing starving people while they attempt to get food."

A wooden bench with hooked fiber art upholstered to the sides and top. The fiber art depicts a sperm whale swimming through blue waves, with air bubbles rising above. The fiber art is wool on linen, using rug hooking and quillie techniques.

I made this textile last year for my sister. Her partner just finished the bench and upholstery work. It is great to see it all together!

Experimenting with painting wool fabric using Inktense for application in an upcoming project. Need to refine a bit, but I think this will give me what I’m going for.

Photo shows the covers of 2 books, Eyes Open to the World by Karen Miller under the book Unravelling Women’s Art by P. L. Henderson. Both books have bookmarks poking out of the top. The book on top, Unravelling Women’s Art, shows a female head and shoulders (no clothes).
The woman’s head is wrapped in white string with some hair and facial features showing through. In front of her mouth is a large mess of thread so you can’t see her mouth at all. The image is by Alia Ali.

I’m a self-taught artist and books are part of my β€œcurriculum”. I’m away from my studio for a few days, but I’m making good use of my time in a family lounge at Penn with these books plus my journal.

Textile artwork stretched on stretcher bars. The image is of a beaded teapot and teacup and saucer sitting on a chequered woven picnic cloth or tablecloth. There are picked dandelions, made from elaborate multi fibre pompoms, laying on the tablecloth to the left the teacup and saucer. Stumpwork embroidery was used to create sepals and stems for the dandelions. Pompom dandelions go up the left side of the piece, into a field of dandelions. The field is a yellow and green transitional spot dye. In other words, a variegated green and gold that goes from intense colour in the foreground by the woven tablecloth, to paler colours back by the treeline. There are over 200 embroidered French knot dandelions in the field. The trees are a grey green and lead to a cerulean blue sky, light at the bottom and darker at the top. Floating in the sky, embroidered on a piece of wool flannel is the Latin name for dandelions β€œTaraxacum officinale”. Flitting about the tea scene and dandelions are five needle felted honeybees with wings made of heat bondable Angelina (tm). Hanging below the piece is a fringe made from groups of four wool yarns of pale blue and pale yellow, alternating with groups of cobalt blue and pale yellow. The fringe is made by overhand knots at the top. The pale yellow yarn was dyed with dandelion petals. β€œDandelions” was created using wool, cotton, metallic, nylon, and Angeline (tm) fibres on linen backing. The entire piece is labeled and lined on the back. The lining is a piece of dandelion dyed cotton. This piece measures 22 inches wide by 14 inches high, minus the fringe (which is about 4 inches long).

Seriously, creative folks: Don't be afraid to let people know your stuff is out there for them, or worry that "now is not the time for that." People are stressed and freaked out and looking for the things that will give them a moment of rest and joy. It is EXACTLY the time for what we do. Tell them.

I tried Rachelle LeBlanc’s gallery finish on this piece and I’m very happy with how this turned out. The tonal wool yarn was perfect for the row of chain stitch between the loops and binding. Visit the shop on her website for a video tutorial on this finish.
