Curious what the shape of the “in excess of 40m euros” fee is for Hato. I would bet low 30’s initial and lot of team achievement + participation add ons.

In sum, Hato is a solid prospect. Fairly conservative, feels pretty high floor. Needs some work to level up from Eredivisie.

I'd be surprised if he cleared 15 90's without Cucurella injury. But well priced deal for a good prospect in the right mould, in a position of need. Job well done.

Given his age/league/team, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Jurrien Timber are decent transfer comparables. Timber is the most comparable in terms of role and level (Timber was righty and older, but better). This is a well priced deal for both sides.

allowing wingers to attack his inside shoulder, open his hips, and attack the box. If Hato can adjust his footwork to *force* wingers to the goal line, he can kill danger even further.

Hato is excellent when defending proactively, jumping in to poke or force attackers to receive and move backwards, but frequently chooses to wait and react instead.

In 1v1's, he uses his pace/strength well to defend wingers attacking the line, but often takes bad angles...

As an understudy for Cucurella, his passing and progression metrics are very similar when adjusting for league strength.

Defensively, he shows up as a strong 1v1 defender in duels with nearly 80% of his 1v1's won and a good aerial presence at FB. The video is less flattering.

As a passer, Hato is steady, if conservative. He's 99th percentile pass completion, favouring retention and circulation over progression and penetration.

He can hit some flat passes into a 9, and is capable of a deceptive dribble to open a passing lane but not frequently.

Hato has spent almost equal time between FB and CB, but profiles somewhere in between as an aggressive CB or conservative FB.

He fits the LB -> LCB in possession role Chelsea are targeting really well, and is more comfortable defending channels than other potential fits.

I think they want the option of touch line winger or inverted winger on both sides (Gittens/Simons or George and Neto/Estevao or Palmer). When Felix went out (and Jackson got hurt so Nkunku played 9), Chelsea just didn’t have that many attacking solutions available, this remedies that.
