Ethnic cleansing is a crime against humanity and is how genocides begin.

I find myself surrounded by BlueSkytes and commenters and pundits calling Mamdani’s charm offense with Trump brilliant. I don’t think it was. I think it normalized a personalist, fascist order in which pleasing the autocrat is how people get things done. I reject that.

100%.

Separately, I know everyone is cheering Mamdani’s charming of Trump. I’m not because I think doing so helps cement the norm that the way to govern ourselves is though making the authoritarian happy. That’s not democracy.

I think everyone should be asked this question (I regularly ask people a version of this question).

The president of the United States is a national menace and should be impeached and removed from office.

The “why can’t” reason is explained in my original post.

The “what else can be done” question: Defiance, condemnation, actionable threats, confrontation, social ostracism. Anything and everything that doesn’t start with an implicit acceptance that Trump is all powerful and must be accommodated.

Totally agree. Mamdani SHOULD have taken a train.

I’m disagreeing with all the takes that Mamdami charming Trump was smart. Every time someone acts within the frame of this personalist, fascist regime, it helps to consolidate and normalize it.

Yesterday, the President called for the murder of Congressional Democrats.

Today, dozens of Congressional Democrats voted to condemn the left.

Pretty much think about this every day. It’s why I and some of my scientist-activist colleagues have shifted somewhat from actions aimed at the climate and biodiversity emergencies to facing tech-oligarchs, fascism and state repression, such as the ICE-led ethno-terror campaign.

When you look at a crescent Moon and you see that the darker side of the disk is still a little bit visible, a little bit lit up, not quite dark… That’s because light from the Earth is illuminating that part of the Moon. And a tiny, tiny bit of that light is coming from you if you’re seeing it.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

White House Defends Donald Trump's 'Quiet, Piggy' Snap at Female Reporter: 'You Have to Be Able to Take' It The White House is defending Donald Trump for calling a female reporter 'Piggy' during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Friday, Nov. 14. When the White House defends Trump calling a female reporter “piggy,” it’s more than rude. It’s a classic authoritarian tactic: publicly humiliating and attacking someone to assert power, intimidate critics, and signal who is “in charge.”

Today is just one long demonstration of the One Special Boy virus that has consumed our polity. Immediate presidency-ending stuff for anyone else from at least Truman to Biden. We're not even pretending to care about the law or the Constitution or any of the norms or duct tape anymore.

I’m still thinking about “quiet, piggy.” No president should be able to speak to a member of the press that way and remain president. That moment encapsulates how vile, misogynistic, and horrible that man is.

A simple act of rebellion against all this is for families to live their lives like mine did when I was a kid: Sports were just something we did for fun, spontaneously, without structure, without much equipment and without any adults at all. Why do sports have to be a giant thing?

not exaggerating when I say that this should be grounds for impeachment. it's not a crime, but it is I think a "high misdemeanor"; a flagrant abuse of office demonstrating sweeping contempt for the first amendment and the American people.
