22.11.2025 17:09 — 👍 3 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0I find myself surrounded by BlueSkytes and commenters and pundits calling Mamdani’s charm offense with Trump brilliant. I don’t think it was. I think it normalized a personalist, fascist order in which pleasing the autocrat is how people get things done. I reject that.

Separately, I know everyone is cheering Mamdani’s charming of Trump. I’m not because I think doing so helps cement the norm that the way to govern ourselves is though making the authoritarian happy. That’s not democracy.
I think everyone should be asked this question (I regularly ask people a version of this question).

The “what else can be done” question: Defiance, condemnation, actionable threats, confrontation, social ostracism. Anything and everything that doesn’t start with an implicit acceptance that Trump is all powerful and must be accommodated.
Totally agree. Mamdani SHOULD have taken a train.

Today, dozens of Congressional Democrats voted to condemn the left.

Pretty much think about this every day. It’s why I and some of my scientist-activist colleagues have shifted somewhat from actions aimed at the climate and biodiversity emergencies to facing tech-oligarchs, fascism and state repression, such as the ICE-led ethno-terror campaign.
