Attended my first city council meeting today and boy was my district counselor embarrassing. Zimmerman used bad faith arguments to slow down justice for renters. I’d ask how he sleeps at night but I’m sure it’s on high thread count sheets and a mattress that cost even more than rent in Portland.

Without saying a word, the spirit gives Hazard gentle care, tending his wounds from the fight, renewing his resolve. Hazard whispers a thank you, and re-enters the ring calling, finally, on his friends to help him.

So he stops trying to. He asks Backup to free the crew’s Whisper, who in turn quells the angry spirits in the arena. One wispy form drifts to the corner of the ring, a razor blade in one ghostly hand and a towel in the other. The hazy specter is Hazards mentor — the loss at the heart of his trauma.

Hazard tries to quickly beat his rival to a pulp, but the crowd turns against him. He tries to free his friends and commands them to flee, and his rival KO’s him. No matter what Hazard does, he alone can’t save his friends and defeat the villain.

In the third scene, he is being taunted by a rival gang leader who demands a boxing match to prove who alone can be the savior of the downtrodden, the people’s hero. He’s even captured Hazard’s crew members and placed them in the bleachers, bound and gagged — helpless.

What follows is a series of scenes he relives on a loop starting in bed with Backup waking him up. In one scene, Myra is yelling at Hazard to stop putting himself at risk to protect her and the rest of the crew. In another, he revisits a traumatic time for them both, and they unpack it together...

His foot and calf seem to warp the space around the door, the wood bending inward like it’s made of putty. He pulls back, startled and the door snaps back to its normal shape. “Am I on drugs?” He exclaims to himself.

“I don’t know. Are you?” the mastiff replies cheerfully.

Hazard stretches and climbs out of bed, fully nude, and sleepily pads over to the door to his room. “Ok I’ll get us some food,” he says to the mastiff and reaches for the knob…only it’s not there. Fully awake now and worried, Hazard kicks the door in … to no effect.

Hazard is awakened by the insistent cold and wet nuzzles of a dog wanting attention. It’s Backup: an aging Mastiff now retired from service to Hazard’s best friend and secret crush, Myra Baz. These days, Backup lumbers around the crew’s underwater lair looking for scritches and bacon hand outs…

Co-GMing is where it’s at!! We ran a witch’s road inspired scenario for a player (actually my husband) using a groundhogs day mechanic. In order to progress and leave the loop, the character had to learn to *be vulnerable* and *ask for help*. 🧵
