09.10.2025 23:37 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The Senate has confirmed Trump's pick to run NOAA. Neil Jacobs will lead an agency that's lost ~2,000 staff in a year and could lose most of its research division.
I did a deep dive on why Jacobs wanted this job for @bloomberg.com. Here's what I learned (thread)

08.10.2025 12:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am most of the way through it, and WOW. Yes. Not a light read, but an amazing read.
07.10.2025 17:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0How about "natural energy," since this administration is bent on "natural" solutions for health problems and wellness, anyway?
07.10.2025 17:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love this. Every one of these tips. We could all use some sources of calm.
04.10.2025 18:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0OK, football-smart people, my son has a question I couldn't answer. When one defender forces the fumble and another recovers, who gets to wear the chain (or whatever the team has for turnovers)?
04.10.2025 18:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love LOVE this because it shows hope. It shows that solutions work.
02.10.2025 12:06 β π 45 π 13 π¬ 1 π 0I'm glad that bit resonated with you, @subletteweather.com!
30.09.2025 18:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Univ. of Nebraskaβs Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences has established a webpage soliciting the communityβs help in saving their program. Their hearing in front of campus admin is next Friday, Oct 10th. Please consider sharing why theyβre essential!

At least we now have in writing that NWS operations will continue in the event of a shutdown. I mean, I was 99% sure that was the case - but in this day and age, I did want to see it confirmed.

26.09.2025 11:18 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve heard of people doing a Wikipedia hackathon to create or update pages for peers and colleagues. If you donβt get any volunteers here, maybe organize a bigger event where folks can participate and trade their updating services.
25.09.2025 19:59 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0ACOG reaffirms that acetaminophen is safe for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. No reputable studies support suggestions like those in HHSβs recent announcement linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to autism; in fact, high-quality studies show no such risk. https://bit.ly/47Wxc59
22.09.2025 21:24 β π 2007 π 1150 π¬ 22 π 66Had a horrible experience when I got mine 5 years ago. Had to track down all documentation (marriage certificates and divorce decrees) from every past marriage, not just most recent change. Every change from birth certificate to now. And this wasn't explained even after 2 trips with docs. #womantax

If I could just summarize 1 sentence from the new National Academy of Sciences study on climate, boldface, flashing red, it would be:
"the evidence for current and future harm to human health and welfare created by human-caused GHGs is beyond scientific dispute."
BEYOND SCIENTIFIC DISPUTE

Iβm so glad to hear that! There is a really good book out there about the locusts - LOCUST by Jeffrey Lockwood. Also nonfiction but with great storytelling.
20.09.2025 20:23 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'll be in Spearfish SD in just under a week to participate in the South Dakota Festival of Books! Time series of monthly Northern Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies from 1850 to August 2025 alongside multi-model expectations of the warming in this area (scenario SSP2-4.5).
The Northern Pacific Ocean is currently smashing temperature records.
And it is reaching these levels far earlier than the current generation of climate models had expected.
