A resource of RNA-binding protein motifs across eukaryotes reveals evolutionary dynamics and gene-regulatory function - Nature Biotechnology RNA-binding motifs in eukaryotic proteins are presented in a comprehensive resource.

New in @natbiotech.nature.com: a team led by scientists at MSK and โ€ชUniversity of Toronto have developed a new platform to facilitate the study of RNA-biding proteins (RBPs) across hundreds of species of plants, insects, and animals.

Think of HERVH as an ancient โ€œvirus scrapโ€ in our DNAโ€”not GMO. In early embryos, it wakes up at pluripotency, not to make viruses but to turn on antiviral โ€œguardsโ€ (like APOBEC enzymes). So itโ€™s less โ€œvirus attackโ€ and more โ€œviral parts repurposed to help protect our embryos. Cool repurposing!

The backbone and most attractive part of HERVs existence in genomes can be explained by the addiction hypothesis proposed by Cedric, so we do acknowledge it ๐Ÿงต3/3

In morula, KRAB-ZNF/TRIM28 could be locking HERVH down; in the inner cell mass, pluripotency factors free it. Freed HERVH lncRNA then helps drive APOBEC3 enzymes that cripple retroelements, a tidy self-reinforcing antiviral loop. ๐Ÿงต2/3

Just dropped our Mobile DNA review on HERVH, an ancient retrovirus now repurposed to build and defend the early human embryo. Call it genomic up-cycling!
I felt HERVH went unnoticed this year, so we published this as a refresher; two fresh data papers - coming soon.

Today is a devastating reminder that infectious diseases donโ€™t care what your โ€˜beliefsโ€™ are. Everyone is likely to be affected directly or indirectly. Serious challenges require serious people at the helm. Protect your loved ones. Educate. Advocate. The cost of not doing so will be too much to bear.
