to be clear here, this isn’t what i think is the BEST reeves film, it is just my personal favorite — the one that i regularly rewatch. it is his directorial debut, MAN OF TAI CHI, where he plays the villain

To me, MAN OF TAI CHI was the culmination of a lot of his post-Matrix/pre-Wick work, where he channeled his trademark Stoicism (or "woodenness", if you're a dull 90s critic) into callousness, and it worked.

(seriously fantasy worlds should do a lot more integration of their fantasy & magic elements into things like birth control, martial aids, baby formula, medicine, crop & human fertility, etc, as well as agricultural & manufacturing labor, these things are *important* liberalizers!)

On the plus side, it reinforces the idea that fantasy world builders often focus over much on the exciting (often male coded) stuff of violence and kingship when they should really be thinking about, idk, the role of alchemists and mages in manufacturing baby formula and boosting crop fertility.

Basically every single piece @bretdevereaux.bsky.social does about realistic discussion of historical (especially peasant) life has me just going "you know, for constructed fantasy worlds, historical accuracy is actually stupid and this is something of a checklist of How Not To Get a Nightmare."

What makes a document passable is acceptance by others for some purpose.

if an LLM generated document is acceptable it means that truth, accuracy, or originality were not requirements; or possibly that nobody read it at all, and the only requirement was that it exist

I call this the reverse Turing Test. If an LLM is producing something passable, it doesn't mean the tool is intelligent, it means humans were being asked to write something meaningless
