to be clear here, this isnโ€™t what i think is the BEST reeves film, it is just my personal favorite โ€” the one that i regularly rewatch. it is his directorial debut, MAN OF TAI CHI, where he plays the villain

To me, MAN OF TAI CHI was the culmination of a lot of his post-Matrix/pre-Wick work, where he channeled his trademark Stoicism (or "woodenness", if you're a dull 90s critic) into callousness, and it worked.

"You owe me a life."

Hey wait a sec is the law and itโ€™s application actually this very fluid thing that just bends around the question of what decision will protect the most wealth of the most wealthy people at this particular moment

just a reminder again that we were told over and over that a 13 year old downloading a Limp Bizkit mp3 was an existential threat to society

I love this stuff. Had a lot of old Dragon Magazine issues in the 90s and occasionally you'd get an article e.g. "if you bring a dead king back to life after a century, is he King again?" or "what if the local druid circle increases the kingdom's crop yields in exchange for protecting forest land?"

Collections: Life, Work, Death and the Peasant, Part I: Households This is the first post in a series discussing the basic contours of life โ€“ birth, marriage, labor, subsistence, death โ€“ of pre-modern peasants and their families. Prior to the industriaโ€ฆ

But seriously this series is both extremely good and should be *instantly* understood as "this is why You Actually Don't Hate Modernity As Much As You Think."

(seriously fantasy worlds should do a lot more integration of their fantasy & magic elements into things like birth control, martial aids, baby formula, medicine, crop & human fertility, etc, as well as agricultural & manufacturing labor, these things are *important* liberalizers!)

09.08.2025 17:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 121    ๐Ÿ” 13    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 11    ๐Ÿ“Œ 9

On the plus side, it reinforces the idea that fantasy world builders often focus over much on the exciting (often male coded) stuff of violence and kingship when they should really be thinking about, idk, the role of alchemists and mages in manufacturing baby formula and boosting crop fertility.

Basically every single piece @bretdevereaux.bsky.social does about realistic discussion of historical (especially peasant) life has me just going "you know, for constructed fantasy worlds, historical accuracy is actually stupid and this is something of a checklist of How Not To Get a Nightmare."

I did love the climax when Odysseus is shooting suitors and his arrows hit with such force they're knocked back into the walls!

People should not be asked to write things nobody will read, unless it is an exercise in self reflection. And I don't think that's really what we're talking about here

09.08.2025 13:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I disagree.

What makes a document passable is acceptance by others for some purpose.

if an LLM generated document is acceptable it means that truth, accuracy, or originality were not requirements; or possibly that nobody read it at all, and the only requirement was that it exist

09.08.2025 13:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I call this the reverse Turing Test. If an LLM is producing something passable, it doesn't mean the tool is intelligent, it means humans were being asked to write something meaningless

really feels like housing affordability is one of the most important political issues of our time, affecting nearly every aspect of our lives, and everyday our mainstream political discourse is about whether sour cream is woke or not

Writing a alternate WW2 thriller series where the Axis invests even more heavily in terrifying superweapons and as a result Berlin falls in winter 1944 because the actual ROI is terrible

I still remember the Showcase channel in Canada advertising its uncut evening movies with the line-up scene from THE USUAL SUSPECTS, with each actor in turn saying:

"Gimme the keys, you--"

weird voice: "--FUZZY SOCK SUCKER."
