I was working the Bike Valet tonight directly adjacent to where VicPD shot a person with less-lethal rounds. I was not present for the incident and know nothing, and am mentally and physically fine.
That said.
It was exhausting having people coming up in a steady stream to ask what happened.

Hastings at Main, looking east.
ten years ago, it was different here. there were places to go. meetings. art shows. music. food. on Friday afternoon, stop in at every door and say hello, for hours. "we're going visiting," you'd say. and talk about everything. it was a bad situation but then everyone started dying & never stopped

βWikipedia is this economic anomaly. In many ways, itβs sort of magical that people will just volunteer without explicit economic incentives to create artifacts that are meant to share knowledge with everyone in the worldβ

Page B1 of the July 26 edition of the Victoria Times Colonist newspaper
This business column took an excruciatingly long time to put together, partly because it took so long to confirm the identities of police board members who were appointed by the province.
And yes - you read that right. The province accidentally appointed someone to the wrong board (fixed now).

It's very hard to pick winners and losers. But if you're in this industry, for a while, you can get a sense of things. One thing I believed in 2020 and still believe today: there is no particular honour or value in being the last one off the sinking ship. 14/

Personal news: In this morning's newsletter, I announced that I'm leaving FVC (and Overstory Media) at the end of the week.
My reasons include general burnout, personal living circumstances, and the challenges that come with operating a publication, especially one part of a larger media business.

Interesting approach here from a Victoria city councillor live-tweeting her own council meeting! In the past, this would have been done by a reporter (or three). I'm not sure how many dedicated municipal reporters remain in #yyj these days.

1/ This is a solid article by the TC's @michaeljohnlo.bsky.social on police response to public drug use in #yyj. A lot of people think the City sets policy, but the article makes it clear that the police and the province make the rules, and that a lot is up to individual officers.

Emily Lowan's slogan, as seen on a podium. "Fight The Oligarchs, Fund Our Future."
People gathered in Victoria for the launch party for Emily Lowan
Spotting several city councillors at @emilylowan.bsky.social's launch party at the United Commons on Balmoral. Jeremy Caradonna, Matt Dell, and of course, Susan Kim, who has endorsed Lowan.
Spotting a few former/current Sonia Furstenau supporters in the crowd as well.

there's a mistake in print, which has since been corrected in the digital copy: coun. Westhaver, who was participating virtually, also voted against sending the plan towards public consultation. didn't catch it in the hubbub of the meeting late last night.

I'm not 100% sure if the folks hurling insults were associated with SOS or were free agents. but I'd agree that the characterization in Saanich News is incorrect. I was the only reporter in the room and I was stationed right at the exit where the heckling was concentrated
