Too kind of an introduction, Nevin. I have a first-hand (through my photojournalist grandfather) Nikon FM2 that is experiencing a mirror lockup issue. Recall this happening once, in HK. Took it to a shop which fixed it in under five minutes. Hoping for a repeat

A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

The BC government likes to talk a big game about its "proactive disclosures" - documents that are made public on a schedule, rather than requiring an FOI to obtain

But even that seems to be getting worse? I'm noticing more and more redactions in the monthly briefing note logs #bcpoli

I've spent my day tracking down Canadian companies that have direct or indirect contracts supporting ICE operations.

So far, I've found NINE. I've reached out to all of them.

I plan to publish my video on this tomorrow, detailing the companies, contract amounts and purposes.

No, Indigenous people are not coming to take Canadians’ homes For all the fear-mongering, the Cowichan decision in B.C. only reaffirms the law of the land

"This is why the decision is not a threat – it is a reaffirmation. And seeing it as a threat applies a Trumpian lens to the Canadian state: that relationships should be transactional, and not about building a better, equitable country for all our children." www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/f690186...

This case is an important one to watch if you care about your own right to know. If the police are free to arrest, detain and block journalists while acting on industry's behalf, our whole information ecosystem gets eroded.

Canada's 2030 climate target far out of reach, according to federal data | CBC News Canada's legally binding climate target seems to be out of reach, according to new data released from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

If I remember correctly it was only found out after a minister/pm made a passing comment to David Baxter of the CBC.

Had a conversation with a 19 year old over Christmas; I asked her where she gets her news and she said she doesn't. I asked her where she goes to find out about the world and she said she doesn't. Just...doesn't. Shook me to the core, in part because I should have known this is happening but didn't.

Comment: How Victoria’s bike and roll network changed my life Even if you, or your friends, don’t use the safe bike and roll network, there are thousands and thousands of your neighbours that do.

“An isolated bike lane is a toy; a useful network of bike and roll lanes is core infrastructure.”

I love this commentary on how empowering it is to have choices in your community. It’s also invigorating to know many communities in the region are contributing to a useful network of transportation ♥️

Victoria developers could see 'permit fee holiday' under mayor's proposal Mayor Marianne Alto says it’s important to keep the momentum of new residential developments going so the cost of housing can come down in Victoria.

Nice to see @victoria.ca consider this. It doesn’t offset the 10s of thousands added to housing costs in the last few years but this acknowledges that city fees has a large impact on housing costs and housing supply. Story from @michaeljohnlo.bsky.social

The changes that were voted in by council would mean that the Times Colonist would lose CoV ad money equivalent to the annual wages for a reporter or two, if I'm understanding this correctly
