With lots of aviation friends my biggest concern was just taxiing and needing to hit the breaks hard or turbulence. There are so many fairly normal circumstances where a carseat will protect a kid and a lap or even lapbelt can't

Traveling with mine at about 18mo and the FAs insisted we couldn't use the carseat in paid seat and it took the pilot coming back to overrule that he was 100% good with it. There is no way my arms were safely containing a huge toddler at rapid deceleration or turbulence. Almost got kicked off tho
