Unless the message is literally just that people are entitled to have feelings, which, sure yes 100%

Seems like a quick jump from here to "obviously I believe an accused rapist should have the right to a trial of their peers, but if they're aquitted, the jury should be hunted down and killed"

At long last, we've created Mecha Hitler from the classic sci-fi novel "Please Create Mecha Hitler" (it was written by Hitler)

At this point they're founding new companies just to make enough ads for Walton Goggins to star in

It bothers me a little bit (though as Nathan pointed out, I'm not the actual victim here) to see the narrative of Israeli Jews as carrying out a unique evil in backstabbing their gracious hosts, rather than the still horrible but less unique reality

30.06.2025 16:33 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It's a minor point, but I do bristle a little when I see the ahistorical notion being shared a lot online that Ottoman and mandate Palestinian Arabs welcomed Jewish refugees- some did, many didn't (arguably understandably), and while it obviously doesn't justify the Nakba and later occupation,

30.06.2025 16:33 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, obviously I don't think people should agree with them- I don't- but there's often an attempt to justify the expulsion and oppression of Palestinians in universalist human rights terms but, unfortunately, it is often either self-delusion or deception.

I hadn't heard about him- darkly ironic to see him writing that a Jewish state would not be able to absorb the entirety of the diaspora population.

They do think they "know better" as an oppressed minority.

They think universalism is hollow, and no one will save us, and the problem is we weren't strong enough.

I disagree and think it's horrible but I wish more people tried to understand the dynamic.

Yes, I'm aware. And are you saying you think two candidates will try this despite it being unlikely to succeed outside of an RCV environment? If you were just saying someone will try it, then sure but if you think it'd be effictive outside of that environment that's the disagreement.

27.06.2025 19:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I mean, do you think this strategy/type of campaign would be possible without RCV?

27.06.2025 18:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I had thought you were implying this could be done outside of a RCV race. As someone who thinks otherwise and thinks RCV should be implemented for every election (though with a point system preferred over instant run-off like in NYC) I said something.

Apologies if I misunderstood what you said

Well, I feel like I explained myself as best I could in this time and place. Have a good day!

Landers would have had to drop and endorse Mamdani before voting started (or before a Super Tuesday equivalent) and that's exactly what Buttigieg did with Biden.

"You don't have to choose between us, so let's not get ugly!" Is a great message, but only works for RCV

27.06.2025 17:50 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I guess I'm a little confused how that would be significantly different than the 2020 primary, where the message was always "look, at the end of the day, we disagree on these things but we have to stop Trump"

Like everyone was always going to endorse post primary. If NYC wasn't RCV then

27.06.2025 17:50 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I just think there would have to be a built in, predetermined "as few hard feelings as possible" mechanism to consolidate before the first vote is cast and with time to make sure every knows. Hell, it could be rock, paper, scissors but then why wouldn't they do that before running?

27.06.2025 17:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The more superficial it is, the less of an impact it's likely to have. The only reason Lander and Mamdani could corss endorse and cross campaign to the degree that they did is RCV.

If the argument is that RCV is good cause it allows stuff like this, which is good for the reasons you said, agreeπŸ’―

27.06.2025 17:34 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Hit the wall all at once. It only works if both candidates are totally agreed and committed on some objective metric to decide who drops out before voting starts, and even then they'd have to do extra work to make sure their supporters are onboard with the deal

27.06.2025 17:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Sure, but the unfortunate nature of non ranked choice voting is that the more time you give people to get invested in their candidate, the later, and harder, it'll be to consolidate.

A big part of why it got ugly was because people built up months of argument to defend their preference and then it

27.06.2025 17:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Can backfire hard (see Sanders and Warren in 2020, which kind of tried to do a "you can like us both" for a while and then got ugly when it was clear you can't actually vote for two primary candidates)

27.06.2025 17:06 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

That's easy to say until the rubber meets the road though- I think that works if someone decides not to run (in exchange for guaranteed VP or cabinet spot) and campaign together, but they'd just be hurting their "lane" by not consolidating hard before voting starts, and worst comes to worst this

27.06.2025 17:06 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Still don't see how this makes sense outside of RCV. Unless they're precommiting for one to drop out and endorse first primary based on polls in exchange for guaranteed VP, I feel like this risks vote splitting into irrelevance- you'd have to do a duel sudden death preprimary

27.06.2025 16:57 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I remember our Yeshiva high school b ball team played some small Christian school team called "The Crusaders" and thinking that was very odd and kinda offensive.

To be fair, I guess, we were the Macabees so maybe some innocent Selucid Greek civilians could have objected

27.06.2025 15:07 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

This is all aside from the point that I think Mamdani's actual answer in context was fiiiiiine academically, I think his quote on Colbert, was a much better (and probably more planned) example of how to thread the needle of beoming NYC mayor while not abandoning the Palestinian cause

27.06.2025 15:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The issue isn't really "the voting public" when it comes to NYC, it's "Jewish Voters" and, while I think people having hysterics about the keffiyeh or Palestine Pins or whatever is ridiculous, "intifada" very specifically means the second intifada and the associated civilian targeting to that pop
