The majority of Earth Medicine’s patients come from Syria and Afghanistan, Velasquez says. Many suffer from old war injuries, while others have broken bones and nerve damage from dangerous crossings and pushbacks at sea.
She is hoping their work together can help heal the emotional trauma, as well as the physical pain, that many of their refugee patients suffer.
"I just hope all those faces I have seen in the past 10 years, they find home, finally," Velasquez told Reuters.
