An Afghan national, sheltered in a church in Berlin, is to be deported to Sweden. The man had just stepped outside of the church briefly, and was only days shy of having his case automatically transferred to Germany.

The majority of Earth Medicine’s patients come from Syria and Afghanistan, Velasquez says. Many suffer from old war injuries, while others have broken bones and nerve damage from dangerous crossings and pushbacks at sea. She is hoping their work together can help heal the emotional trauma, as well as the physical pain, that many of their refugee patients suffer. "I just hope all those faces I have seen in the past 10 years, they find home, finally," Velasquez told Reuters.

Shirzad fled his homeland after he was attacked by the Taliban.
The pair became friends and eventually started a relationship.
Now they work together to heal the wounds and souls of arriving migrants.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government has stepped up border control with Germany and Lithuania after Poland became a transit country along a new migration route from Baltic nations towards Germany.
The checks will now continue until at least October.

The Organized Voluntary Return Programme offers safe transport, counseling, and reintegration support for Syrians choosing to return from Lebanon, with initial destinations including Damascus, Rural Damascus, and Homs.
Since December 2024, around 700,000 Syrians have returned from neighboring countries -- 200,000 of them from or via Lebanon -- many without formal assistance.
