4. We know that people are much more likely to be convicted if they remain in jail prior to trial, and that people who own property can often pledge their property as security for bail rather than putting up cash, making renters systematically disadvantaged and more likely to be convicted.

3. Public defenders usually operate in this hilarious fictive space, where everyone knows that they are taking too many cases to comply with ethical rules, but also if they attempt to plead this to a judge, it won’t go well for their client, and there’s no one else to help the client.

Let’s talk about what a conviction often means.

2. Pleas are essentially at the point of a gun: there is a “trial sentencing penalty” for exercising your constitutional right to a trial, so many innocent people plead guilty

I’m not sure what the answer is in the UK. In the U.S. you can refuse both; they can’t compel your speech.

Incorrect, but there’s also a difference in the immediacy of the illegality of the order, and the authority that makes it illegal, and the degree of your knowledge (and your rank) also matters.

Tl;dr: it’s complicated, and you better be right, but also you have ethical obligations.

The real problem is zoning and housing law which assumes single family is the best use.

I own a house in the suburbs. I fucking wish they would build some multi family houses. The streets are creepily quiet. I don’t give a fuck about property values, all they do are raise my tax payments.

That’s actually not true for a lot of people. Many people don’t want to sell at all; in fact, the idea that housing should be constantly cycling only benefits bankers as they keep getting the interest on 30 year mortgages. Why not build more housing?

A lot of veterans I know didn’t have a position on Palestine until they watched things they were taught to identify as war crimes happen on live TV by people that bragged about them with money from their taxes.
