This is kinda grim isn't it? "Welcome" and "VisitManchester.com" pasted on the metal fences they've put up to make sure that Tory conference attendees don't accidentally interact with Mancunians.

Iβm no longer sure who the ideal UK equivalent would be; Paddy McGuinness would show too much mercy.
Perhaps one of my hyper-competitive faves from Taskmaster?
And donβt worry: comments are switched on for this ad, and someone has correctly commented βget off-a ya faceβ
28.08.2025 21:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Advert for a book called βModern Psychedelicsβ, with the subtitle βthe handbook for mindful explorationβ. The authorβs name is Joe Dolce
Itβs moderately surprising that Redditβs algorithm has chosen to serve me an advert for this book about psychedelics, but that wouldnβt be worth a reshare on its own.
But when the author is called Joe Dolce, I have no choice but to tell the world.
There _was_ a UK version - presented by Vernon Kay because it was ITV in 2008 - but itβs not appealing: prerecorded and only 75 minutes is coward shit. And having a different celeb each week isnβt as cool.
Iβd be much more excited if weβd committed to Beat The McGuinness or something.
β¦which doesnβt suit my understanding of German stereotypes. Fortunately they make up for it by having a music question where the answer is Looking For Freedom by David Hasselhoff.
Anyway, I now love this show, and I really hope that it manages to stay fun instead of getting repetitive.
β¦but itβs still a pleasing level of variety, and pretty impressive pace and scale (though pace is helped by the adverts being edited out). One of the events is a penalty shoot-out, which gives the host an opportunity to cuss England for being shit at them. Fair play.
There are a few tech problemsβ¦
β¦for a broad family audience, you donβt have to be that good at German to keep up with it. So I have now watched the first episode (only three hours) and enjoyed it enough that I intend to keep going. The events at this stage are a lot more conventional than the shopping trolley pushβ¦

β¦Iβm no expert in German culture, but Stefan Raab has had a lot of involvement in Eurovision (most significantly to me, he wrote Guildo Hat Euch Lieb) so Iβm a bit aware of him. Just aware enough to make me even more excited about the concept of this very ambitious-sounding tv showβ¦
23.08.2025 22:25 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I was impressed enough by that shopping trolley video from a German game show that I had to go track down the show. And I was delighted with what I found.
Turns out its original incarnation was Schlag Den Raab: each week, a different member of the public takes on Stefan Raab in a series of gamesβ¦
My best guess was that I fell out of watching TOTP when you werenβt around to watch it with, but Iβm not sure that quite makes sense.
16.08.2025 23:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Getting really confused about my own history watching these 1998 #TOTP repeats.
Cos surely I watched these all at the time. But Iβve just watched an episode that features Spiritualized and Aqua, and was presented by Jayne Middlemiss, and it didnβt feel familiar at all.
@extremerice.bsky.social as usual Iβm a bit behind on the #TOTP repeats. Remind me why It Started With A Kiss got rereleased in 1998? Presumably it wasnβt just because of Kenickie.

The drop-off in singing after the first line was beautiful to hear.
it is roasting in Manchester today, and the pubs in the Northern Quarter are already busy.
I think Heaton Park is going to host some of the reddest faces in UK history tonight.
Did you know that the famous "Snake Charmer" Catchphrase was altered in repeats on Challenge TV to make it less rude-looking? I find that absolutely *mad*, it's not like it was hugely obscene in the first place!
