Elated to receive my copy of the We/Ourselves: Twenty-Five Plays Celebrating Gender Diversity today, featuring my play Distaff! Itโs a ten-minute play about two trans kids sneaking into a holy cave where a goddess sleeps (maybe). You can pick up a copy anywhere books are sold!

โ๏ธ doing precision tasks (like fiddling with the clasps and straps) is hard to do with any speed. consequently, people who hang out in armor are pretty casual about touching each other to fiddle with bits of armor
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ wearing armor can be a constant barrage of sensory information; you heat up quickly in a helmet, anything ill-fitting can pinch and bruise when you start fighting
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
armoring goes so much faster with another pair of hands to do the fiddle-y clasps at the back of your greaves and cuisses and helmet clasps
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ you quickly learn the practical utility of squires and such. There are only two pieces of my armor I can't get into alone (my breastplate fastens in the back, and my arms tie at the top in such a way I would have to use my teeth to fasten them if I wanted to do it alone) buuut
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ itโs fucking hot under all that padding. Folks who have linen gambesons probably fare better, but the padding of the gambeson still makes it hot
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ wearing a helmet feels like putting on horse blinders. the ones I have worn all rely on internal chinstraps to stay in place
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ cuisses and greaves (thigh and leg armor) is held up with suspender-like cords from an arming belt that rests under the breastplate (with my setup, I have to put on my leg armor first because of that)
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ that being said, you really notice the extra weight on your arms and legs when youโre wearing metal. as a still relatively noodly person, holding my arms over my head to fiddle with my helmet fastenings is particularly annoying
02.05.2025 21:52 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
โ๏ธ it's surprisingly easy to build up the strength to wear and exercise in it. Even only getting into armor once a week, I was very sore after the first two weeks, but markedly less sore after that unless I take two weeks+ off

An ancient manuscript. Along the left margin is a drawn-on octopus whose tentacles point out important sentences on the page.
In the 14th century, someone who didn't have a highlighter handy thought to use octopus tentacles to mark the most important parts. I love it so much

The Lady of Shallot is close to my heart and I am in love with Hannahโs depiction of her in all her carefully-woven misery - it was a delight writing the words to this piece.

I adore the way youโve used the colors on this one - the way Lancelot is warm-toned and set apart, and the Lady is regal and cold and part of the background.

An illustration of a knight, Lancelot, with his head in the lap of the Lady of the Lake. The text reads-
Son of the Lake, they call Lancelot, and he knows what it is to be weightless.
There had been death in the Lake, but not the ensnaring crush of armor and duty and breath. When the scales tip, when duty to king and lady and faith become a yoke he cannot bear, when he cannot fit one moment against the next, he flees to his truest family, to the Lady who will always welcome him back.
This is your home no longer, she whispers. For I am not your purpose.

Galehaut and Lancelot is one of my favorite Arthurian stories - to love a man so much to give up your crown for the sake of being close to him! When Galehaut receives prophecy of his death if he doesnโt keep Lancelot close, he refuses to tell Lancelot for fear of putting obligation on him.

An illustrated page done in the style of an illuminated manuscript; on the right, it shows a blue forest scene, with two figures in pink: a pale-haired man in 14th century clothes atop a horse, watching a man on foot draw back a bow. On the left, the following text: A hunt had been Lancelotโs proposal, spoken in his blunt, halting way. Since Gawain had laid eyes on the Flower of Chivalry, he knew the knight to be his match. In the full light of day, when the sun is high and strong and his strength is at its peak, Gawain can meet him blow-for-blow; but at dusk, Lancelot often surpasses him in arms. But the Gawainโs domain. I may never match him in arms, thinks Gawain, lifting his bow. Therefore I must love him.
