Circular diagram split into two equal halves. The left half is shaded light blue and labelled 'THE POEM', while the right half is unshaded and labelled 'THE POET'. The word 'POETRY' appears in large curved text across the bottom of the circle, spanning both halves.

Still image of the nighttime beach scene from the Barbie Movie with Ken and Barbie sitting by a fake campfire. He plays a guitar while facing her, who sits across from him. The ocean is visible behind them under a starry sky, and pink text above the fire reads '4 hours later...'.
Was it flirty? Was she simply lost in the moment? Imagine the guitar scene in the Barbie Movie with the roles reversed.
Either way, it was all academic. We hadn't spoken before and we didn't follow it up. Who knows what could have been?

I suddenly recalled tonight that I was once serenaded with the Brenda Russell track Piano in the Dark by a girl in the school year below me.
Her piano-playing and singing were spot-on. However, it was the intense eye contact for the entire song that I still don't know how to interpret.

As someone who ran a poetry open-mic for nine years, I feel this intensely.
One technique that makes my eyebrow twitch is the forced use of words at the end of every second line just so they rhyme with the one above it.

A Vision Most Absurd At The Picture House
By Gavin Cameron
Oh Dundee, city of culture and light,
I ventured forth on a Saturday night,Β
To a cinema grand on the old Seagate,
To witness a film at a quarter past eight.
Called β Monty Python and the Holy Grail, β
I thought it perhaps an Arthurian tale.
But alas! What comedy now was seen
On the bright and silver screen.
A knight mimed a horse to the claps of a shell,Β
And was told his father of elderberries did smell.
A rabbit leapt forth with murderous bite,
And slew brave men in the midst of their plight.
A knight said, β Ni! β with terrible force,
And demanded a shrubbery, of course.
I gasped aloud, β This cannot be right! β
For never before had I seen such a sight.
Yet still I stayed, through jest and quip,Β
Whilst pop-corn I ate and drinks I sipped.
I pondered the question, in which I did wallow,
Whether 'twas a laden or unladen swallow.
A few months ago, my poetry circle β The Wyverns β released a pamphlet on the theme of the great man. I wrote this one with the following blurb:
'An imagined scenario which completes the circle of William McGonagall influencing Spike Milligan, then Milligan influencing Monty Python.'

Being from Dundee, I was exposed to McGonagall from an early age, but I really enjoyed the Stephen Pile books.
I'll never forget the story of Clive Bunyan who robbed a bank wearing a helmet with his name on it, nor Ivan Lester Maguire who skydived wearing his camcorder kit instead of his parachute.
