For the first time in history, since the Bay Conservation & Development Commission (BCDC) was formed in 1965, they voted to reduce public access & close 4 miles of Bay Trail along the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge four days/week for 3 years.

"The population is notably aging.
There is a deficit of working-age adults (25-44 years) and young families who cannot afford to live in Marin, leading to workforce shortages that require 64% of workers to commute from outside the county. Continued declines in this age group lead to declining school enrollment and closures that further deters families and working age adults from moving to Marin."

"18.4 per 1,000 households left Marin County between 2010 and 2023, with more lower-income households leaving than higher-income households (33.5 per 1,000 households). The data suggests that:

‍More economically vulnerable residents from Marin are forced to leave, while wealthier households can still move into and remain in the county.
‍Marin experienced a loss of local labor, requiring many local workers to commute long distances from outside the county."

@mtcbata.bsky.social An HOV lane on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge isn't going to fix this. At best it's ineffective at addressing the issue, & at worst it exacerbates the problem by taking attention away from real solutions.

You had an opportunity to be responsible and truthful, and you failed.

In a historic move, members of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) decided to remove public access to the Bay, contra to their stated goals of increasing maximal public access to the Bay. Car-brained nonsense. The fight's not over yet.

making everyone's lives worse - more traffic, less public access. failure of governance.

My note: The current debate around the study performance measures & timelines is a level of abstraction which allows commissioners to not have to confront the real, daily impacts on individuals from their decision making.

08.08.2025 00:01 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Astonishing to hear several BCDC commissioners state that:

Ending 24/7 bike/walk access to Richmond San Rafael Bridge curtails maximum public access to the Bay,

AND that such a move is unprecedented,

BUT they still plan to curtail access.

Why? The purpose of BCDC is to protect & expand access.

HUGE HUGE victory for San Mateo County, for anyone who rides transit in the Bay Area, anyone who drives & hates traffic, people who like breathing clean air and a growing economy.

San Mateo County will be joining IN to the regional measure for funding transit! Big group win & lots of work ahead!

Because San Mateo County does not have any representatives on the BART Board of Directors, some leaders were adamant about including explicit language and oversight to ensure the operator uses the potential funding wisely. While the county contributes significantly less in operating costs than the member districts β€” San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties β€” it also means it has less sway in operating decisions. The county’s transit leaders have historically expressed frustration over what they consider subpar safety measures and lack of coordination scheduling with Caltrain.

Absurd. San Mateo wants more BART oversight for county to join regional transit measure, yet:

1) BART is the ONLY Bay Area transit agency with oversight from an independent Inspector General

2) San Mateo is the only county that doesn’t pay fare share to BART

Column | More Americans are car poor as they misjudge trade-in math and pile on debt More than 1 in 4 consumers owe more on their car loans than the vehicle is worth, while car payments of $1,000 have reached a record high.

Cars are bankrupting Americans. It's time to support policies that give people more choice in how they get around, especially if they choose to walk, bike, roll, or take transit (or any combination thereof)!

NEW: Committee unanimously passed the ROAD to Housing Act.

Americans need affordable places to live – and they need them now.

Our new package will combat the housing crisis by making commonsense reforms to boost supply and bring down housing costs.

There's a massive bipartisan housing bill moving forward in Congress Many of the provisions in the ROAD to Housing Act of 2025 would cut red tape.

Cool to see bipartisan support for a bill that, among other provisions, encourages building more homes for people around transit!

The American Public Transit Association has issued its vocal support! (link in comments)
