But what you’re saying definitely matches the literature side - the early poems and books just mention a military leader named Arthur, and he didn’t get described as a king until much later. But even in the earliest references we have they’re describing something way in their past.

I really know more about the literature side than the history side but from what I’ve seen, historians are less into the idea of a historical Arthur than ever

I love the idea of a random book having anti-Bible qualities. If you give it to someone it increases the ambient wickedness in the room

either Arthur's grave or Avalon. The fact that the search for Arthur's body is connected to Henry I| and Edward I, both kings who fought major Welsh wars, has had scholars suggest that propaganda may have played a part as well. 47) Gerald, a constant supporter of royal authority, in his account of the discovery clearly aims to destroy the idea of the possibility of King Arthur's messianic return: "Many tales are told and many legends have been invented about King Arthur and his mysterious ending. In their stupidity the British [i.e. Welsh, Cornish and Bretons] people maintain that he is still alive. Now that the truth is known, I have taken the trouble to add a few more details in this present chapter. The fairy-tales have been snuffed out, and the true and indubitable facts are made known, so that what really happened must be made crystal clear to all and separated from the myths which have accumulated on the subject."[48]

Gerald of Wales: The Irish are Cow-F*ckers
Prose
Gerald of Wales was a Welsh-Norman author who served as royal clerk and chaplain to King Henry II of England. Henry was responsible for the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland (1169-77), which brought large portions of Ireland under English control for centuries.
Gerald wasn't involved with the invasion, as he only received his position in 1184. But he ended up touring parts of Ireland on royal business, which eventually led to two of his books: Topographia Hibernica (A Topography of Ireland), a description of the island and its inhabitants, and Expugnatio Hibernica (The Conquest of Ireland), a flattering yet informative account of Henry's victories.
Like many educated authors writing official propaganda about conquered peoples, he depicted the Irish as culturally backward, technologically primitive, and morally infirm. From his perspective, they deserved to be conquered.
The Topographia includes quite a lot of local superstition and folklore. Unfortunately, Gerald mostly uses it to make fun of Gaelic culture. One odd passage concerns a "minotaur," an infant born with deformed features. Like most medieval authors discussing
"monsters", Gerald does not regard the child with any particular compassion. But Gerald is perhaps more compassionate than the villagers, who, he states, murdered him to hide their secret shame. Things like these happen, we are told, because the Irish can't keep their... hands off the local livestock.

Gerald of Wales wrote this when the claim about finding Arthur’s body came out. He also wrote a whole lot about what he thought was wrong with the Irish. Which led me to this amazing Reddit comment.

The possibility of Arthur's return is first mentioned by William of Malmesbury in 1125:
"But Arthur's grave is nowhere seen, whence antiquity of fables still claims that he will return."
[1] In the "Miracles of St. Mary of Laon" (De miraculis sanctae Mariae Laudunensis), written by a French cleric and chronicler named HΓ©riman of Tournai in c. 1145, but referring to events that occurred in 1113, mention is made of the Breton and Cornish belief that Arthur still lived. 21[31 As Constance Bullock-Davies demonstrated, various
non-Welsh sources indicate that this belief in Arthur's eventual messianic return was extremely
widespread amongst the Britons from the 12th century onwards. How much earlier than this it existed is still debated. 4! It did, in fact, remain a
powerful aspect of the Arthurian legend through the medieval period and beyond. So John
Lydgate in his Fall of Princes (1431-38) notes the belief that Arthur "shall resorte as lord and sovereyne Out of fayrye and regne in Breteyne" and Philip Il of Spain apparently swore, at the time of his marriage to Mary I of England in 1554, that he would resign the kingdom if Arthur should return. In 1191 the alleged tomb of Arthur was identified in an orchestrated discovery at Glastonbury Abbey. Whereas numerous scholars have argued that this could have been due to the Abbey wanting to stand out with an illustrious tomb, 49] or to a desire of the Plantagenet regime to put an end to a legendary rival figure who inspired tenacious Celtic opposition to their rule, 50] it may also have been motivated by how the Arthurian expectations were highly problematic to contemporary Christianity. The longing of the return of a mighty immortal figure returning before the end of time to re-establish his perfect rule, not only ran against basic Catholic tenets but could even threaten the quintessential focus on the longing for the return of Jesus. 51] This was further aggravated by how the stories about Arthur sometimes invoked more emotions than biblical tales. 52) Decades of elite critique of the popular conviction among otherwise pious Catholic Celts in Britain and Brittany had done nothing to suppress these beliefs, whereas the orchestration of Arthur's physical remains effectively eliminated the possibility of his return without overtly criticizing anyone's beliefs. 53]
After the 1191 discovery of his alleged tomb, Arthur became more of a figure of folk legends, found sleeping in various remote caves all over Britain and some other places, and at times, roaming the night as a spectre, like in the Wild Hunt. 54]

On the other hand, the notion of Arthur's eventual return to rule a united Britain was adopted by the Plantagenet kings to justify their rule."12! Once King Arthur had been safely pronounced dead, in an attempt to deflate Welsh dreams of a genuine Arthurian return, the Plantagenets were then able to make ever greater use of Arthur as a political cult to support their dynasty and its ambitions.
So, Richard I used his status as the inheritor of Arthur's realm to shore up foreign alliances,
giving a sword reputed to be Excalibur to Tancred of Sicily. 13) Similarly, "Round Tables" β€”jousting and dancing in imitation of Arthur and his knights
β€”occurred at least eight times in England between 1242 and 1345, including one held by Edward I in 1284 to celebrate his conquest of Wales and consequent "reunification" of Arthurian Britain. 14] The Galfridian claim that Arthur conquered Scotland was also used by
Edward I to provide legitimacy to his claims of English suzerainty over that region. 15]

Historians keep putting more Arthur into their histories. People start complaining about Britons believing in a messianic Arthur (something they apparently did believe? We mainly have stories making fun of it.) At some point someone fakes finding Arthur’s grave and that becomes a whole big thing.

The timeline basically goes:
- Weird stuff about a guy named Arthur starts appearing in history books, centuries after he supposedly lived
- People start saying Arthur will return
- Geoffrey writes an absolutely bonkers β€œhistory” where Arthur is king and a wizard is his friend
- Centuries of arguing

Take a picture of yourself at the No Kings rally.
Print it.
Put it in a frame.
Your grandchildren will speak about you for generations to come. You took a stand against fascism. You stood up for democracy.

So many weird replies. β€œIf you really wanted your protest to have an impact you would self censor and make sure no one what happened.”

I for one do not think the lesson to take from successful protest movements in the past is β€œno pictures”.
