Maybe they’ll be your collaborators and maybe they won’t. Maybe your careers will grow together, maybe they won’t. That part doesn’t matter as much as real honest connection.

Develop real friendships in the space with people you can trust.

this isn't as fun as some others BUT

if you're sharing your comic for free, someone's gonna complain about something unimportant at some point, the schedule, the style, a color choice etc. and I NEED you to know

that you can tell them to give you a million dollars to do it to their specifications

So, you know... it's okay.

making pinup drawings is all good and well, but it won’t make you any better at comics. only making comics will make you better at making comics.

Stop waiting til you're good enough. You both never will be, and already are. ✨

ALSO:
- never sign away your rights
- stuck? take a walk about it
- have some interests that aren't art/writing
- don't just read other comics, but also watch film, tv, theatre, read books, listen to music
- sleep on that art and come back to it tomorrow

know that the big manga artists have like half a dozen assistants helping them. If you can't do as much as 7 people working more than full-time THAT IS NOT JUST NORMAL, IT IS HEALTHY

You aren't going to fail if you don't make a NYT bestselling novel before you're 30. No, listen to me, look in my eyes: not publishing/not having a smash hit in your 20s is normal. You aren't dead if you don't. Fucking relax

You are in a niche of a niche, and the potential audience is sized accordingly. If you manage to find a way to support yourself exclusively off of your comics output, that's awesome, but you've beaten the odds.

Don't go in EXPECTING to beat the odds.

there is an important lesson to learn right now, in comics circles specifically: if you make yourself known to others chiefly through cruelty, if your main connection to broader community is through judgment and dismissal, then your legacy is cruelty, your ultimate fate is judgment and dismissal

oh i had this realization once

Me: No solo cartoonist should be expected to draw comics with the same detail level and complexity as comics created by multi-person teams. We should accept less intensive methods and results more readily for them.
My brain: Except you tho
