moose are definitely magic in a similar way to cats. Cats will phase through walls and teleport to where they want to go, levitate when startled etc. Moose are less subtle. If there's no gap, they'll make one. If there's no path, they'll make one. The landscape just gets out of their way

(note - this is about areas where we don't have megafauna to keep vegetation growth in check. Obviously areas with moose and similar are going to have moose-width trails and much more spaced-out growth)

The only trails are where trees have fallen or herbivores have stubbornly kept eating away young growth for generations. I imagine fleeing anything more suited to the terrain than we are would be next to impossible.

The ground is all humps and hills from where trees have fallen and decomposed, or where glaciers dropped huge rocks. The trees don't politely put out branches a little above head height. They grow as close together as they can without outcompeting each other.

I think people forget how big and dense the woods used to be before industrialisation and various wars triggered significant logging. Especially in Europe. Ancient woodland is *thick*.
