I also worry that moving on Venezuela would signal a retreat into “spheres of influence,” with China and Russia making only desultory protests at the UN while assuming that the US will do the same in return for them when they move against Taiwan and Ukraine.

Would you really want to pay a tax each year based on the value of your 401k, and then not get a refund when the value crashes?

Except a house has a (main) non-investment purpose and property taxes pay for resources used, with the taxes being low, predictable and appealable. Unlike a tax on wealth.

A bigger tax is levied when the house is sold because it’s simpler to tax a transaction that makes an illiquid asset liquid.

Yes, this is also how it works in the US (capital gains tax).

The rate here varies by how long you hold the asset, and also what your overall income level is. If you trade a lot in the short-term, you pay a higher tax rate on those profits. Lower rate for assets you hold for the long-term.
