13.08.2025 14:31 β π 24 π 8 π¬ 3 π 2Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has made a national name for himself as a swaggering, autocratic leader hostile to any challenge, however minor, to his power. He has alternately denied the existence of the murderous deputy gangs that plague his department, and said heβs neutralized them. Under Villanueva, the department covered up at least one incident of deputy violence against someone in custody. He has defied subpoenas from an oversight commission established by LA Countyβs governing body, the five-member Board of Supervisors. He has bullied and maligned those who question his authority: suggesting that the supervisors, all women, needed to be βtaken to the shed and they need to be beat down so they start doing their jobβ; calling LA Countyβs Inspector General a Holocaust denier; and threatening to use the power of his agency to investigate a LA Times reporter assigned to cover his department. Most gravely, Villanueva has presided over a force that has killed dozens of civilians, and a jail system, the largest in the county, in which 55 people alone died in 2021. An exhaustive list of scandals and abuses could fill a book.
I missed this three weeks ago:
Alex Villanueva, the former sheriff of Los Angeles who lost big in 2022, is running for his old job back next year.
Who is he, you ask? Here's the first paragraph of @psfrench.bsky.social's story from a few years ago: boltsmag.org/unease-in-lo...
In a sense, LA is still suffering from how it grew up. LA grew up as a petroleum boomtown, was built to be endless streetcar suburbs from Day 1. In its early years, it was utterly dominated by a corrupt transportation monopoly called the Red Car system (aka Pacific Electric Railway). 1/π§΅

13.08.2025 15:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Because people are unclear on the concept, every Sen/Gov primary in the last 20 years in California has featured 1 candidate who was "chosen" by the donors & consultants & political players who dictate state politics.
That other candidates also ran doesn't make it a contested primary.
Pretending that the forced DC takeover has anything to do with crimeβwhen that is so clearly a BS pretext for a power grab that sets a baseline for additional power grabsβserves only one purpose: aiding the power grab by trying to give it cover.
That's a choice. Helping Trump lie is a choice.
This really cannot be emphasized enough, & it's even worse than described here because a Democrat saying "I'm tough on crime" is making multiple arguments:
1. That Democrats are not, by definition, tough on crime
2. That we need elected officials who are "tough on crime"
#2 is maybe more insidious
it should be a bigger deal that they are lying so outrageously to justify this fascistic show of force and the fact that it isnβt is testament to the ways in which this countryβs elite is more committed to maintaining racist hierarchies than it is in maintaining democratic institutions

12.08.2025 18:11 β π 44 π 10 π¬ 2 π 0Ford announced plans on Monday to deliver a $30,000 mid-size all-electric truck in 2027, in a potential shakeup of an EV market thatβs been plagued by high costs. But the truck β which is rumored to revive the retro name Ford Ranchero β wasnβt really the main news. The pickup is part of Fordβs plan to βreimagine the entire way it builds EVs to cut costs, turn around its struggling EV division, and truly compete with the likes of Tesla,β Heatmap contributor Andrew Moseman wrote, which the company has dubbed its second βModel T moment.β The strategy embraces a more minimalist, software-driven method of car design that EV-only companies such as Tesla and Rivian employ, allowing them to make mechanically simpler vehicles with fewer buttons and parts and more functions run by software through touchscreens. The push could βchange everythingβ and βdisrupt the U.S. auto industry,β wrote Inside EVs.
