How did the major political parties get their colors? As the votes are tallied on election night and maps show which presidential candidate has a lead in each state, viewers likely won't need an explanation on why some states and red and others blue.

The GOP/Dems didn't even pick those colours! Someone at NYT decided to shade a choropleth a particular way in 2000 and now we're stuck with them. Even weirder, the colour associations were often the opposite up until then.

I have a lot of thoughts on this in the context of data visualisation. Ask me about the diverging red/blue colour scale I had to rip out at the 11th hour recently because my team decided it made a graphic look too much like an election map... Red and blue are tainted colours for data vis.

I wouldn't say they're evil, they're pretty helpful for larger codebases, especially when multiple people are working on them, though maintaining dependencies and configuring build tools can be a right pain. You're correct that they're bad for learning fundamentals, though.

Occasionally the dependencies install malware on the developer machine or create huge security issues in production; it's fine tho

Increasingly feeling like if you can't make blocks private as a primary design goal of a protocol then you should probably go back to the drawing board...

Yeah, afaict each otf file only has one font weight in it, if you look at the files in dev tools it says each only has like 68 glyphs (!).

So if you have the "bold" font and set weight to bold, it'll try to emulate an even bolder version, I think.

Oh, just noticed that the other families are in fact other weights of CRM. You can use CRM as the font-family and use font-weight/font-style to set bold/italics by overloading the definition like so:

tangled.org/strings/did:...

My suggestion if you don't want to have separate display and body fonts is to change CRM to something with more variance. Is there a particular reason you're using it?

Safari dev tools, the CRM font has been given 600 weight. A tooltip says "Font was synthesized to be bold because no bold font is available"

The CRM font you're using doesn't have bold glyphs in it, so what I guess is happening is that Firefox (and Safari for that matter, if you set weight to 600 or higher) is emulating boldness; Safari has a helpful notice mentioning this:
