The β€˜silent’ brain cells that shape our behaviour, memory and health Astrocytes make up one-quarter of the brain, but researchers are only now realizing their true value.

Long thought of as support cells, astrocytes are emerging as key players in health and disease

"We’re still living in overlapping pandemics: COVID, Long COVID, HIV. These are not disconnected crisesβ€”all are shaped by interlocking systems of racism, poverty, criminalization, and medical neglect." Gabriel San Emeterio on World Aids Day.

During promotional visits for her perfume lines, Taylor would quietly visit AIDS hospices. In San Francisco, she asked patients β€œif she could arrange to have their dogs walked; she asked if she could call their mothers for them or write letters for them.”

ALL you have to do is just not use it, tell these companies you aren't using it, and make fun of people who do. We need a mass collective effort to make genAI extremely uncool, lame, embarrassing, cringe. Everyone needs to react to it with a MOUNTAIN of hostility until they run out of steam.

It’s wild how frontline medical workers seem to know very little about infectious disease when it’s like …the whole thing.

arghavansallesmd: Alice Wong was, among other things, a force of nature, a writer, an activist, a MacArthur genius grant recipient, and a fierce warrior for disability justice. She spent much of the last few years advocating for masks and raising awareness of Long Covid. She also co-founded eSims for Gaza, which has raised over $3 million so far to help people in Gaza communicate with the outside world. But you won't read about that in most of the obituaries about her.
I'm sharing here some of her tweets about why masking was so important to her and how hard she had to fight, even in the hospital, to get people around her to mask.
Those tweets are from a hospitalization in January
2024. Ever since her tracheostomy, she could no longer protect herself from respiratory infections. Like many people, she depended on her community to keep her safe. According to her family, she passed away Friday from an infection.
Aside from her work on Covid and eSims, she was best known for the Disability Visibility Project and her books, Disability Visibility, Disability Intimacy, the in-progress Disability Vulnerability, and her memoir, Year of the Tiger. She had a column at Teen Vogue on disability visibility, and she also voiced a character on Netflix that was based on her. Alice did what so many of us aspire to do-she left the world a better place than when she entered it.
I never had the honor of meeting Alice. Like millions of other people, I followed and was inspired by her work. I hope you'll read these slides as a tribute to her and her efforts to build community. I hope you'll wear a mask in public spaces. I hope we'll care for ourselves and those around us the way Alice would have wanted us to. Her GoFundMe remains active and will go toward continuing her work, if anyone would like to contribute.

Alice Wong was one of the few who actually left the world better than when she entered it. A lot of the obituaries are leaving out her work on Covid, her advocacy around masking, and her work on eSims for Gaza. I tried to capture some of that in a post on IG.

Many people dismissed the announcement Catholic hospitals will ban gender-affirming care nationwide under the assumption that there will be other options. In reality, Catholic hospitals make up as much 46% of options in some states. This map is 2020, prior to Trump’s assault on safety net hospitals.

So…who stepped into Epstein’s role once he was arrested? Who is doing the trafficking? Who has that level of influence on politicians now? Are those the same person or different people?

I’ve had good luck with Crane which I found at the local pharmacy. Highly recommend purchasing the one that is easiest to clean. They get very gross very fast.

A quick sketch of Alice Wong, an extraordinary writer, editor, organizer and disability revolutionary. She's beautiful, middle aged, leaning against a power chair headrest, with a ventilator tube attached to a tracheotomy at her throat. wearing vivid purple and a bright red lip. I tried to capture the expression she often wore of joy mixed with an inner amusement and determination.

She was extraordinary, and extraordinarily generous. Alice Wong: I am so grateful to have been alive in her lifetime. She was one of our species' best. She deserved better. My her legacy be for a blessing.

So many vulnerable people were hurt, harassed and raped by these ghouls and nowβ€”I’m worriedβ€”it’s gonna become hehe haha lurid internet circus instead of a long overdue moral reckoning. I’m scared of who we all are becoming. That man has brought us ALL low.

whatever you think of Spanberger, the fact that her opponent ran a campaign based almost entirely on transphobia and is on track to eat shit in the biggest blowout the state has seen since 2009 is unambiguously a huge win
