Bay Area companies skewered over false tsunami information Amid active tsunami warnings, Grok said they'd been cancelled.

‼️ The time to determine who to trust IS NOT during an emergency.

NOW is the time to find trustworthy sources for scientific and emergency response information.

I don't need to tell you all about the history of boom industries and what they'll abandon overnight when line goes down.

But we're not talking rust belts & abandoned malls - nuclear fuel is a critical responsibility for decades. What is the AI industry's plan for nuclear waste management in 2125?

Like nuclear energy can be great but requires centuries-long planning and stewardship to be as safe as it is. Not usually a problem with healthy governments and steady access to expertise. Also because grid level facilities are, despite privatization, public infrastructure with a base demand

Like I've been railing against SMRs for data centers, and basically begging folks to go for grid-level facilities which at least theoretically could benefit the public after the AI bubble pops.

But building these private grids is something that should be fiercely opposed at every level

Nuclear reactors to power AI data farms in US' first private HyperGrid A new MoU cements Fermi America–Hyundai E&C’s plan to build four AP1000 reactors for the HyperGrid campus, powering AI workloads.

- expressly for AI, before the bubble pops

The 2nd Ave. subway is of course near and dear to my heart and infamous in NYC history, but the IBX is the most transformative NYC transit project in our lives. We should of course always demand more transit, but it's good to be excited for this one.

It's okay to adjust! I look forward to being wrong and the chance to integrate better info. We're not always going to get the predictions right, but it's way riskier if people stick to previous positions, especially if it creates a career incentive to be ideological at the cost of responsiveness

Russia's exotic nuclear weapons and implications for the United States and NATO What does Russia have to gain from developing these novel and exotic nuclear weapons? And what should the United States and NATO do about it?

Can't wait for certain folks to adjust their priors since the super weapons ended up to be vaporware

The ability to drop a dozen conventional bombs rapidly at intermediate range is maybe useful in niche scenarios, but nothing at all like a nuclear weapon in direct or indirect effects. Putin knows this and is blustering, or he's being lied to

Lot of folks going to miss it, but Medvedev is not in the chain of command, every relevant person in the US mil/IC is acutely aware of that fact, and that trump is tweeting this shows that the US posture is no longer grounded in reality or their advice. Which, uhh, not great

Big yikes for NJ and NY today. Unlike previous "surprise" floods, this one was thoroughly documented ahead of time. City workers were sent home ahead of the rain's start and events were cancelled 12+ hours out.

Hang on tight mode for now but well done in terms of preparation.

He talked of it creating problems so vast, so quickly, that can grow beyond the ability even of a strong government to address.

YEAH i'm glad Andrew Cuomo and RFK expedited the early shutdown of one of the state's few baseload nuclear generators and replaced it 100% with methane burning plants, this is great

Quote from article linked in previous post: "Some nuclear strategists argue that the ground-based nuclear weapons do not need to be replaced at all; they are far more vulnerable than weapons traveling under the sea on stealthy submarines, or that can be loaded on bombers. But the Pentagon doesn’t want to part with a third of the nuclear β€œtriad,” and the silos and their command posts are big employers in the rural West.

They serve another function in the second Trump administration. The modernization program has proved to be the perfect thing if you were determined to hide how much you are spending on an airplane, especially one equipped to order up a nuclear strike, if needed."

As time goes on, I buy less of the obfuscation angle (that the runaway modernization costs are useful, actually, for projects like this) and more the "can't build anything" angle. Looking back at the NG mess.

All the dire implications notwithstanding it is hilarious how evil this technology is. Billions of dollars spent on this greasy lying stupid thing that was literally built to replace people, and everyone that uses it gets weaker, lazier, dumber, and sadder for having done so. Well done all around.

For women, the increase of AI use in the workplace may affect their careers: Harvard study Women are using AI significantly less then men and it’s going to have a major impact on their careers, according to extensive research on the topic.

Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."
