Legit thought this was an EarthBound fan game with a weird looking Ness for a sec when I first saw this post.

An interesting but rough branching path from where the series end up going with its design. It’s by no means a bad game, and I think there’s an argument to be made that it’s a better game than the first Zelda, but it does feel super different. It’s had a few other interesting games it inspired too.

Glad you had such a great trip! Japan is such a cool place! I’ve been a few times and I’m looking forward to going back soon.

I miss the prevalence of strategy guides too. There were quite a few guides I bought for RPGs I didn’t even yet have at the time, because they were just that interesting to look through with the maps, art, and lore.
