Classic car-brained society moments.

Our car culture summed up in one video.
The problem is the powers that be are so car brained.
Scooter kills person on sidewalkโฆ ban scooters.
kid gets killed on e-bike riding to school (legally) on 50mph road, ban kids on ebikes (actual example from LA Times).
Meanwhile cars just keep on killing.
The infrastructure does a good job of limiting that for the most part. But it still can happen. We had a couple on scooters kill an elderly man in one of the only dense walkable neighborhoods in LA. Of course all the focus was on the escooters and non on the lack of safe micromobility infrastructure
07.10.2025 15:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As someone who rides frequently with an e-bike on the sidewalk because of our infrastructure in LA, I can tell you 20mph is insanely fast for sidewalks that have huge bumps and driveways. itโs pretty hard to do that. The thing is, the worse the infrastructure the less likely there are pedestrians.

04.10.2025 17:55 โ ๐ 25 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0What can mid-rise housing look like on side streets where lots are redeveloped one at a time? This example is a good one.
- All homes have windows in at least two directions.
- Elevator building.
- Entry door from a balcony for fresh air.
50x122 is a common lot size in much of western North America.
some people told dave chappelle his jokes werenโt funny and this ego maniac has been having a meltdown over it for ten years

The gulf is not just between people who oppose this and people who are indifferent to it or reluctantly accept it in support of immigration policy or see it as collateral damage.

Costs go up and down, but you can control for zoning. You can control permitting speeds. Are you familiar with LAโs ED1 affordable housing, it was immediately successful so our mayor quickly changed the zoning to stop it. It showed how much Zoning and permitting are a faucet you can turn on/off.

02.10.2025 20:32 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0For sure. I donโt think anyone would argue against that. Also interest rates. But the zoning has to come first. the only reason to keep it is segregation.
02.10.2025 17:02 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Of course itโs not the whole thing. But if itโs illegal to build it as it is in much LA or any other California city, then it doesnโt matter how much the other costs are, right?

I've been lobbying for California's TOD bill with affordable housing builders. They can't build if it's illegal to build. You don't believe zoning is the first piece of the puzzle?
