Classic car-brained society moments.

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.

The problem is the powers that be are so car brained.
Scooter kills person on sidewalkโ€ฆ ban scooters.
kid gets killed on e-bike riding to school (legally) on 50mph road, ban kids on ebikes (actual example from LA Times).
Meanwhile cars just keep on killing.

The infrastructure does a good job of limiting that for the most part. But it still can happen. We had a couple on scooters kill an elderly man in one of the only dense walkable neighborhoods in LA. Of course all the focus was on the escooters and non on the lack of safe micromobility infrastructure

As someone who rides frequently with an e-bike on the sidewalk because of our infrastructure in LA, I can tell you 20mph is insanely fast for sidewalks that have huge bumps and driveways. itโ€™s pretty hard to do that. The thing is, the worse the infrastructure the less likely there are pedestrians.

What can mid-rise housing look like on side streets where lots are redeveloped one at a time? This example is a good one.
- All homes have windows in at least two directions.
- Elevator building.
- Entry door from a balcony for fresh air.
50x122 is a common lot size in much of western North America.

There is a gulf in America. I submit it is the gulf between good and evil, or at least not-evil and evil.

The gulf is not just between people who oppose this and people who are indifferent to it or reluctantly accept it in support of immigration policy or see it as collateral damage.

Costs go up and down, but you can control for zoning. You can control permitting speeds. Are you familiar with LAโ€™s ED1 affordable housing, it was immediately successful so our mayor quickly changed the zoning to stop it. It showed how much Zoning and permitting are a faucet you can turn on/off.

For sure. I donโ€™t think anyone would argue against that. Also interest rates. But the zoning has to come first. the only reason to keep it is segregation.

Of course itโ€™s not the whole thing. But if itโ€™s illegal to build it as it is in much LA or any other California city, then it doesnโ€™t matter how much the other costs are, right?

Most of what I've read of his work is market rate housing. Of course zoning applies to all of it. I've been lobbying for California's TOD bill with affordable housing builders. They can't build if it's illegal to build. You don't believe zoning is the first piece of the puzzle?

Ha! My commute is over that bridge. I look down on that river of cars everytime and think, โ€œglad I didnโ€™t drive.โ€ My next thought is usually. โ€œGlad I live close enough to bike.โ€ Then Iโ€™m at โ€œWe need more housing close to jobsโ€ and now all I can think about is housing policy for the rest of my ride.
