one time on /r/BE someone tried arguing that real gdp is lower than it was in 1960, and it quickly became clear that they were adjusting for inflation twice! when I pointed it out they switched to arguing that higher real gdp was a sign that we were dehumanizing ourselves as a society

honestly, my support of higher teacher salaries isn't derived from some love of them. it's because teacher salaries are very roughly positively correlated with "likelihood of getting a someone who won't traumatize a child"

in my defense, it was 4th grade and our assigned reading was Roald Dahl - i figured if you were allowed to joke about running over and killing your family (James and the Giant Peach), you were allowed to joke about damaging government property

In elementary school i had two computer lab teachers, one of them knew her stuff but was a bitch and the other one didn't know his stuff and was also a bitch. i got in trouble for writing a short story about burning down the computer lab

so i know that public schoolteachers in the US should be paid more. i also wish truancy were legalized, because school killed my enjoyment of so many subjects. and if i were required to take CS classes as a child I would probably have become Uncle Ted
