Thank you for coming to Erie! Your conversation with Steve Scully was enlightening and inspiring. We also appreciated your comments about Erie's beauty.

Opinion | In defense of the War Department Euphemisms such as β€œdefense” and β€œsecurity” have a tendency for bureaucratic mission-creep.

The ruined #BrokenPost applauds shifting from Defense to War Department because they don't like euphemisms--while finding every possible euphemism for fascism.

The fact that this administration is hell bent on punishing Kilmar Abrego Garcia while rewarding Ghislane Maxwell tells you all you need to know about their violent racism and misogyny.

No, no, no. Use them all the more. Surrender neither words nor their meaning to the fascists.

"Unhoused" and "food insecurity" are among the words I use when I write for The Companion, the Emmaus newsletter. We try to put a face on Erie's most vulnerable people. Words matter, just not in the way Nichols claims.

He also is credited with creating the first gender-neutral pronoun, "thon," info I stumbled upon when I researched more about Converse. According to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, "thon" was the word of the year in 1884.

BTW, Charles Crozat Converse set music to text by Joseph Scriven, called "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." It's also known as "The Erie Hymn," which I learned from a "Jeopardy!" question. I looked up Converse and discovered he composed the music when he lived in Erie for a time, in the 1850s.

The Benedictines truly live the Word(s) of God, otherwise known as the Gospel, and they know that words matter in treating all human beings with dignity.

The Benedictines, who speak up against injustice when the Catholic patriarchy stays silent, just won a national award for standing up for democracy, speaking out after GOP operative tried to suppress votes at the Monastery before the 2024 election.

Tom Nichols has spoken inErie twice. If he returns, he needs to visit Emmaus Soup Kitchen, where the fearless Benedictine sisters treat the unhoused as guests to counter food insecurity.

My grandmother was taking care of my sons, 8 and 6 at the time, one time when she visited and I was working. She made pepperoni and scrambled eggs and it sounded awful but was surprisingly good. Thanks for jogging my memory!

Remember to mention that John Oliver talked about Colbert in Erie, where John had a ball rolling out his rebrand of the Erie SeaWolves as the Erie Moon Mammoths. Great AP coverage of his visit to Erie.

I was sent to NYC for an Erie story after 9/11. My son had died from an aortic aneurysm on Oct. 1, 2001. I remember two things from that trip: The help I received from being part of the collective mourning in New York and the realization that my son, almost 27, had been a gift for his time here.

Great recommendation to watch the presentation, then the news clip. I am not technology brain, just a retired (well, semi-retired) journalist concerned about the deep decline of local news, both print and TV, in my hometown. Great food for thought and possible solutions.

Thank you for recommending it. My local PBS station did not carry it, but I was able to watch on PBS in NY.
