It was the spring of 1990, A young man named David Kirby lay on a hospital bed in Columbus, Ohio, dying of a disease that had ravaged his body and torn its way through his community. A call goes out to one of the nurses in the hall, accompanied by a young journalism student and friend of both the nurse and the young man. The journalism student waits outside, as the nurse helps the family to grieve and helps ease the man’s pain on what would be his last day on earth. But then, the door opens, and the journalist is invited in, to carry out the young man’s wishes and share what this disease had done with the world.

In November 1990, LIFE Magazine ran a now-legendary photograph of AIDS activist David Kirby’s last moments. Just out of frame was another eventual victim of AIDS, and the reason Therese Frare was in the room at all; Peta, a two-spirit caretaker with their own story to tell.

I've seen two in the flesh, but both in situations where it was difficult to judge height. One was relaxing upstream of a beaver dam in Denali NP, up to her neck in water. The other was from probably a 500 meters off on a gravel road in Maine.
