It was the spring of 1990, A young man named David Kirby lay on a hospital bed in Columbus, Ohio, dying of a disease that had ravaged his body and torn its way through his community. A call goes out to one of the nurses in the hall, accompanied by a young journalism student and friend of both the nurse and the young man.
The journalism student waits outside, as the nurse helps the family to grieve and helps ease the man’s pain on what would be his last day on earth. But then, the door opens, and the journalist is invited in, to carry out the young man’s wishes and share what this disease had done with the world.

In November 1990, LIFE Magazine ran a now-legendary photograph of AIDS activist David Kirby’s last moments. Just out of frame was another eventual victim of AIDS, and the reason Therese Frare was in the room at all; Peta, a two-spirit caretaker with their own story to tell.

We saw a district in Tennessee engineered to be R+22 swing to be ~R+13 this week. I'm betting a bunch of those new districts in Texas don't have that kind of margin to lose. When we empower Texans to vote, the GOP bites it, so let's take care of Texans, y'all.

Really, though, can we get the Hilux stateside, or someone to make an 90s-era S-10 sized pickup again? Some of us have things to haul but also want to fit in parking spaces.

Perhaps, but there are a number of scenarios in which I would buy a Kei truck.

Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League is one of, if not the best limited run DC's done this year and todays #5 is the best issue yet. @gregrucka.com and @nicolascottart.bsky.social have outdone themselves.

After they had workshopped Usain, Troy, and Michael, I told them we had ~2100 plants and they had to stop naming them.

First flower of this experimental round!

Also, because my cohort of undergrads are huge dorks this go-round, this plant was named Usain, because it was also the first to Bolt. 😂🙄

I need a TN person to explain this to me. In VA, an early lead from the tiny red states is rarely indicative of a win because the blue cities are still counting, because they’re where the people live.

Why am I seeing so many folks already calling it?

I've seen two in the flesh, but both in situations where it was difficult to judge height. One was relaxing upstream of a beaver dam in Denali NP, up to her neck in water. The other was from probably a 500 meters off on a gravel road in Maine.

One thing I implemented with a new (to me) class this semester: one relevant classic paper per week. Jacob and Monod was on the list, and it's a great example of a review paper.

Humans do all of these too, usually better, and for far fewer resources.

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are trying to rescue you. Who’s coming to save you?

Reeeealllly think this could go either way and is very dependent on who, specifically, we're talking about.

No teaching today, but since SOMEONE took a header while carrying a box of unsecured plant labels, I’m spending time in the office playing the world’s worst game of solitaire. 😁
