when you play well. That and there's the thing of when you add an extrinsic motivator to something that's already intrinsically engaging, then it can come off as irritating to some (of which I am one). I think Matthewmatosis got into this dilemma in one of his videos.

Trust me, everything you said is music to my ears. It's just a mental thing whenever an score is added on top of the gameplay. There's something almost belittling about them, where you can sense the presence of the designer sitting next to you and patting you on the head....

TIL that "Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS" was a pun.

I can somewhat see the argument but I just find that whenever it comes to scores based runs, everything gets reduced to optimization and overly deterministic play. And if it doesn't fall into those categories, then the score play is too random so no one likes it. It's a lose/lose scenario.

"Our shit tastes better than their's" is not the winning argument you think it is.

Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005)

This is the film every quirky indie film wants to be. But all of them lack the specificities of Miranda July's debut film. They're all weird in broad, predictable ways but this is weird in a way only it can be.

familiar to MGS3's audience as he said? That and him saying that he believed as of recently that B/W was a tech limitation just makes him look asinine.

Honestly, it just felt like SBH showing his ass for how little he knows about cinema.

How do you open a video saying "MGS3 was made for film lovers" and then talk about stuff like compositions, lighting and off-screen space like they're new discoveries. Shouldn't those concepts already be....

Something I just learned recently is that this is also Michel Gondry's favorite film (The director of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND).

In fact, he illustrated this beautiful poster for it when it had its 1990 re-release in France. His name is signed on the left next to the anchor.

Y'all know what you've gotta do.

(This is Canadian price, so don't give me that "still too expensive" crap)

Anything Rob Zombie has made, especially THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. Shit is demented but I kinda love it.

Also James Cameron's TRUE LIES is unapologetically racist and sexist. It's also batshit, so I like it.

Iโ€™ve had long convos with critic friends of all stripes about how ashamed other male filmmakers should be that almost objectively one of the most empathetic and sensitive male directors on the subject of the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of women is *Roman Polanski*

L'Atalante (1934)

Could very well be the best film of the entire 20th Century.

Effortlessly mercurial. You could spend minutes trying to find the right words to describe it, only for it to change form/tone and suddenly those words no longer apply. And to top it all, it's sexy and romantic as fuck.

If I was a Kojima fan, I'd say this was breaking expectations and is actually a metanarrative commentary on player's expectation from a Metroid game.

But because I have functioning braincells, I'll call it what it is; Dogshit.

(Yes, dumping on Kojima is how I cope)

I don't trust anyone who doesn't admit having at some time in his life enjoyed trashy American movies; I don't trust any of the tastes of people who were born with such good taste that they didn't need to find their way through trash. (1969)

This year, I dipped my toe into Tokusatsu. Loved so much esthetically but couldn't stand the repetitive format.

Then I got more into Wuxia films and discovered everything I loved in Tokusatsu but now without the padding.

Moral of the story; once again (and forever after), Cinema >>>>>>>>>>>>>> TV.

You can ignite some of their curiosity. Like maybe recommend something short and concise that can give an idea of what else is out there.

But then yeah still, after that it's up to them to decide whether they want to continue or if they're satisfied.

Save The Green Planet (2003)

Recently remade as Bugonia which I haven't seen but I'm sure it's hyper-mid like everything Yorgos makes. So just sit back and watch the original which is far and away the most batshit film I've come across.

Admittedly I know next to nothing about it first hand but I imagine it's closer to theatre except we the players are actors (devs seem aware of this with how they leen into it with games like Mario 3 and Pathologic).

To quote Ebert quoting film exhibitor Oscar Brotmann; โ€œIf nothing has happened by the end of the first reel (~20 minutes), nothing is going to happen.โ€

I personally wait 40 minutes, but after that if a film ain't moderately interesting, I have no qualm bailing. If it gets good later, too bad.
