Legally, this is no different from Iran sinking a Disney cruise in international waters and then saying "it's all good, they were terrorists carrying drugs."
Which is to say, it's wholly illegal and has been for centuries. You couldn't even do this with a Letter of Marque and Reprisal.

The shutdown will worsen hungerβwhich the Trump administration just stopped tracking
Millions of women and children are at risk of losing food benefits.
Shortly before the shutdown, the USDA moved to scrap the Household Food Security Report, the nationβs primary tool for tracking food insecurity, and in doing so, stripped away the very infrastructure needed to remedy rising hunger in America.

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.
After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....
Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century βwokeβ ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.
Below, are the accounts of BartlomΓ© de las Casas.

Laugh at Trumpβs ridiculous innumeracy, sure. But the commander of the worldβs most powerful military is responding to relevant questions about the laws of armed conflict by claiming that the existence of drug deaths in general permits him to kill anyone he feels like, which is very serious.

We Must Stop This Civil War Before Itβs Unstoppable
Once we accept deadly violence as a normal part of American life, weβre done for.
I hesitate to even post this on the kind of platform fueling the crisis we're in.
It's almost certainly futile, as the algorithms don't want anyone to hear this kind of sentiment - which is a big part of the problem.

In agency after agency, the U.S. government is losing its capacity to measure how American society is functioning, making it much harder to gauge the nature and scale of the problems we are facing and the effectiveness of policies.

βStaggeringβ Water Loss Driven by Groundwater Mining Poses Global Threat
A new study finds that freshwater resources are rapidly disappearing, creating arid βmegaβ regions and causing sea levels to rise.
2/ As reservoirs shrink and glaciers melt, people have increasingly drilled into a largely ungoverned cache of fresh water underground.
And as @abrahm.bsky.social explains, our sinking ground is actually a foolproof sign of this supply disappearing.

From Project 2025 and the βOne Big Beautiful Billβ β America did this to America
This isn't just about one election; Americans have been voting against their own interests for a long time.
βThe unpleasantness of our present is directly connected to the apathy and animosity that took control inside voting booths in the past. Itβs an example of how the past is prologue, which then demands that we make the present ground zero for change.β
