The ministries said the spraying constitutes a hostile act and a grave violation of Lebanese sovereignty, warning of severe damage to vegetation, soil fertility, agricultural production, water sources, and long-term public health. They held Israel fully responsible for the resulting environmental, agricultural, and health harm, and announced expanded field surveys and precautionary measures for residents and farmers. Glyphosate is commonly used in military vegetation-clearing operations along borders to kill crops, grass, and ground cover, strip concealment, create exposed buffer zones, damage agricultural livelihoods, and discourage civilian presence and return. Lebanese authorities warned that its use in this context threatens food security and long-term environmental stability. The chemical has been classified as โprobably carcinogenic to humansโ by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a UN-affiliated body, raising additional concerns over health risks from high-concentration aerial spraying. UNIFIL said it was informed in advance by the Israeli military that a so-called โnon-toxicโ chemical would be dropped near the Blue Line, forcing peacekeepers to suspend operations for more than nine hours across roughly one third of their area of responsibility. UNIFIL called the action unacceptable and a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the spraying as an environmental and health crime and ordered diplomatic and legal action. Lebanon has documented more than 2,000 Israeli ceasefire breaches in the final three months of 2025, as Israel continues to occupy Lebanese territory and block reconstruction in border villages. ๐ฅ Video from GreenSoutherners

In just two weeks from Jan. 20, OCHA documented over 50 settler attacks causing casualties and property damage and is assessing needs to guide the humanitarian response.

Fighting broke out in recent days in western Tigrayโs Tselemti district, a disputed area claimed by Amhara forces, with one source warning the situation is โdeteriorating.โ The violence comes as Tigray remains devastated from the 2020โ2022 war, amid deep humanitarian crisis worsened by sharp U.S. aid cuts. Aid groups say up to 80 percent of the population needs emergency assistance, even as funding has dried up and health systems remain fragile.
Liam Karr @liam_karr War in Tigray would have a huge impact on the spiraling escalation across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Eritrea is partnered with Tigray (TPLF), and Abiy and Isaias are itching for a fight. Eritrea is also important to Egypt-Saudi, while Ethiopia is key to Israel-UAE. Reports over the last 24 hours have been very ominous. Tensions had been steadily building throughout 2025, with the TPLF and Abiy at an impasse after the TPLF retook control of the Tigrayan government in March and had its legal party status rejected in May. There were also reports that Ethiopia had cut financial support to Tigray and effectively begun reimposing a siege on the region in late 2025. A tightening siege and airspace closures are eerily similar indicators of imminent/ongoing conflict in the run-up to and beginning of the Tigray war in 2020, given Ethiopia's restricted information space. Given the regional ties, this could be Sudan, but an even worse, inter-state version. Up to 600,000 people died in the Tigray war.
