Reports over the last 24 hours have been very ominous. Tensions had been steadily building throughout 2025, with the TPLF and Abiy at an impasse after the TPLF retook control of the Tigrayan government in March and had its legal party status rejected in May. There were also reports that Ethiopia had cut financial support to Tigray and effectively begun reimposing a siege on the region in late 2025. Senior police officer Keneth Lovi said the killings were carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamic State-linked armed group. 15 men were burned alive in a house and seven were shot in Apakulu village in Irumu territory, while three others were killed in Walese and Vonkutu villages, he said. The ADF originated in Uganda in the 1990s, seeking to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni. After being defeated by the Ugandan army in the early 2000s, the group relocated to eastern Congo, where it continues to carry out deadly attacks on civilians.
