Just watched Tim Cain's latest video on overanalyze games. I get where he's coming from but I think it depends on the person.
For me, I'll at the very least get a deeper appreciation of a game if I analyse it. Does it make a game MORE fun? Tbh sometimes it does lol

Fully mapped out level 6 on Wizardry 1

In the norther section there are 3 rooms in a row. The middle room leads to the stairs down, but a the rooms to the left and right lead straight into pits with no way to see them ahead of time.

Floor 6 mapped! Honestly the actual navigation of this floor was fine. Though annoyingly I did not explore the northern sector that had the stairs down until the very end lol.

Also a very particular fuck you to the pits placed behind doors with no way to anticipate them...

ngl the encounter was easier than I thought it was gonna be, considering how badly I got my ass kicked last time. But I think I just did better strategy-wise.

Hmmm... in a multiplayer game, a matchup is technically a kind of encounter isn't it... so that's why player mechanics are so important in them, because they are functionally also encounters.

I know that there are wizardry games with less punishing grinding and maybe less admin, and there are some non wizardry blobbers that are also even less of that but I want to play at minimum Wiz 1-5 before moving on to Etrian and the like

The biggest lesson I learned while playing Wizardry is that enemy encounter design contributes more to the depth of a game than player character design does.

I've felt this way for several other genres but wizardry is one of the better applications of this concept when it comes to RPGs

I still prefer Whitney's performance, I think the more powerful vocals and the marching band style arrangement just fits the song better than the soulful vibe Charlie went for (also adding a sax there is a bit much lmao)

The American national anthem is one of my least favourite songs but I just listened to Charlie Puth's performance of it. Extremely good like Whitney Houston's performance was, and clearly inspired by John Clayton's arrangement too. There are now 2 listenable performances that I know of.
