I have also considered just keeping 1 high level character in the roster to act as essentially a murphy's ghost tour guide of sorts in case of future wipes. getting a fresh party to lvl 2/3 in the first place is already an annoying thing

you got the expression spot on, but to clarify あとをつぐ in this case is to succeed someone, the verb 継ぐ (changed to continuative form with 継ぎ) meaning to succeed. but "follow in X footsteps"
そのちちのあとをつぎたびにでたい would then mean "follow in your father's footsteps and go on a journey"

I didn't even have e33 and the game awards in mind when I wrote this mind you but this becomes doubly true when talking about that game

jrpg isn't a real genre. its a useful shorthand and comparative term (i.e. if you like tales games you'll probably like falcom games) but when more academically discussing things like whether the genre has "evolved" enough or not it becomes tautologically useless

What makes ARPG such a confusing term is that they basically come from three distinct unrelated lineages that play nothing like each other: dragon slayer, tower of druaga and diablo

Yeah, some form of structured, pedagogically-sound study method like a textbook is basically vital.
A lot of people who go "you shouldn't use textbooks" are from people who used them and simply discarded how useful they were in hindsight, forgetting that's how they built their foundation
