Spotlighting The World Factbook as We Bid a Fond Farewell Somewhat devastating news today from the CIA: One of CIA’s oldest and most recognizable intelligence publications, The World Factbook, has sunset. There's not even a hint as to why they …

The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...

Vocational Awe and Librarianship: The Lies We Tell Ourselves – In the Library with the Lead Pipe Vocational awe describes the set of ideas, values, and assumptions librarians have about themselves and the profession that result in notions that libraries as institutions are inherently good, sacred notions, and therefore beyond critique. I argue that the concept of vocational awe directly correlates to problems within librarianship like burnout and low salary. This article aims to describe the phenomenon and its effects on library philosophies and practices so that they may be recognized and deconstructed.

In her honor, please read her original essay about the term she coined:"Vocational Awe". Take a moment today to reflect on your relationship to work, especially if you are in a so-called helping profession, regardless of field.

The reason why RAM has become four times more expensive is that a huge amount of RAM that has not yet been produced was purchased with non-existent money to be installed in GPUs that also have not yet been produced, in order to place them in data centers that have not yet been built, powered by infrastructure that may never appear, to satisfy demand that does not actually exist and to obtain profit that is mathematically impossible

The Latest Trends in Comics Censorship: Book Censorship News, December 26, 2025 What are the trends in comics censorship over the last year? A look at the data and titles being targeted, with help from a comics scholar.

Here are the latest trends in comics censorship from 2025. As you might expect, more comics are being targeted and in particular, manga is feeling the heat. So, too, are adaptations, women's non fic, and more.

Big thanks to @anuncivilphd.bsky.social for her insights.

This is incredible news.

So this massive Oracle/OpenAI data center Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is trying to push on Michiganders can’t even find financial backers. Yet, if you drive on US-12 you wouldn’t know the project HASN’T been approved by the amount of construction already happening.

A page that looks like a scan from an old game magazine. A circular graphic contains a watercolor illustration of an enthusiastic wormlike dinosaur thing with a smiling yellow star and a worried looking blue diamond. A box in the lower half contains an illustration of a treasure box with a funny face, decorated with white crosses. In front of it are a green potion, a gold coin, and a silver key.
There are also 2 game screenshots. One is of a title screen, featuring the dinosaur like worm, and one is of the same character standing in a little stonework house before a blue spheroid face, which is speaking.

The text on the page is one continuous statement and does not relate to the images. It says:
Header: Wondering how young I’ll die.
Featured text, next to round illustration: We now take it as granted that the western empires will collapse.
Title screen screenshot: In a real sense, it has already happened.
House and dialog screenshot: we were born into a dead world.
Text below screenshots: and now decay begins. We, having prepared all our lives for a future that can never arrive, feel lost. We must go on living. But what will life be, and how long can it last? America has become a nation of endless plagues

Sure, they've made an environmentally catastrophic mass hallucination disinformation plagiarism Clippy that will destabilize the world, but also their other goal is to replace human workers entirely and let us humans starve. A boycott of AI is the most important boycott of your entire life.

AI Is Supercharging the War on Libraries, Education, and Human Knowledge "Fascism and AI, whether or not they have the same goals, they sure are working to accelerate one another."

Librarians told 404 Media they're being inundated with new pitches for AI library tech and catalogs are being flooded with AI slop books.

But more broadly, AI maximalism across society is supercharging the ideological war on libraries, schools, government workers, and academics.

The chopper meme, with the characters replaced with Garak and Bashir from Deep Space Nine.

Panel 1: Garak as the chopper dad, saying "WELL, THAT'S A LITTLE GRAPHIC FOR CHILDREN, WOULDN'T YOU SAY?".

Panel 2: Bashir as chopper son, saying "BUT THE POINT IS, IF YOU LIE ALL THE TIME, NOBODY'S GOING TO BELIEVE YOU, EVEN WHEN YOU'RE TELLING THE TRUTH".

Panel 3: Garak still seated as chopper dad, saying "ARE YOU SURE THAT'S THE POINT, DOCTOR?".

Panel 4: Wide shot of both characters. Chopper dad Garak is standing, looking surprised in the left background. Chopper son Bashir is swinging a chair in anger, saying "OF COURSE. WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?"

Panel 5: chopper dad Garak standing and pointing, saying "THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER TELL THE SAME LIE TWICE"
