Oh my 😀 By all accounts she became lovely in her old age (first hand reports from witnesses including my wife, my mum, several friends and, er, me), though reading her 70s memoir it's clear what a chaotic mess she was much of the time!

Also it is, genuinely, better (and I love Doolittle).

I've been reading Jilly Cooper's memoirs lately and, as well as bringing nostalgia-by-proxy for my own childhood, it's a fascinating reminder of how some things, among middle class white people at least, really were totally accepted then that are (obviously and correctly) awful now.

Not on purpose. But I do have to check every now and again with my assistant if something I say or think might be racist.

I've realised one reason I can't stand Banksy et al - when art is a joke (even a good one), every time you see it it's like the artists is simply repeating the joke over and over, so even if it started off as clever and funny, it quickly feels desperate and annoying.

Today's unsought advice: if you love an author's work, and they've written a memoir, don't wait till they die to read it.

The moment any article or conversation about anything tangentially related to fashion tells me what I *should* be wearing is the moment I decide I loathe the person writing or saying it.

I really struggle with that. My brain longs for linear storytelling (which I accept is my stupid brain's problem) and while I can appreciate a master can do wonderful thing leaping about in time, anyone *other* than a master is probably going to fuck it.
