Tabling for our campus ministry at the W&M, and a student just came up to us and admitted she knew nothing of the Episcopal Church, but after Bp. Budde's sermon, she wants to learn more! Evangelism!

If the argument is that Bp. Budde, in a religious setting, overstepped her bounds by being political (a stance with which I disagree, she preached the Gospel), perhaps our political institutions should not overstep their bounds and decide what constitutes theological orthodoxy.

Just a thought.

We are all guilty of the sin of not caring for those around us, and if we’re not hearing that sermon as a wakeup call for each of us, we’re missing the point. May God have mercy on us all, as we strive to show mercy to those who most need it.

Bp. Budde spoke directly to one with great power who needed to hear that some of those he represents are scared. But she did so by preaching the Gospel.

But if we’re not using our power, our voice in the ways we still have it to speak in support of those whose voices need to be heard, then we are wasting our time.

He felt he had an obligation to use that voice in support of those who would not be heard. A voice to the voiceless.

The Episcopal Church does not have the power we once had – mostly for the good, I’d say.

Last spring, I was in York (the old one, in England) on pilgrimage with our college students. We had the honor of spending part of the day with the Archbishop of York, who was generous with his time – but then he had to leave for an interview with the BBC.

Bob Uecker had another critical skill we don’t see much anymore: he knew how to be absolutely hysterical without being cruel or mean to other people. That’s not easy to do, and I suppose it helps when you provide so much of your own material.

This year, we have a young adult as a deputy, so we did not need to use the special provision. But! She started at the last convention as our youth alternate, and wanted to come back as a full deputy. Our deputation has been enriched by her presence. Every diocese can do this!

As we hear from the AMAZING Official Youth Presence, I make my triennial announcement: The Diocese of Southern Virginia has a canonical requirement to include a youth or young adult as one of our deputies or alternates, who attends convention regardless of position. #gc81
