Olu had thus far failed at her attempts to pinpoint the moment where “that's my friend, they're so cool, I like them so much” crossed into crush territory, but she reckoned it was around the time every other word in that sentence got italics in her mind. Like, “that's my /friend/, they're /so cool/, I like them /so much/!” As if the force of her feelings was what tilted the letters. And maybe it was! The trouble was what to do with all those italicized feelings. It wasn’t like Olu to get crushes, and her music reflected that. Her lyrics tended more toward the introspective or even political than romantic, though in some ways every song became a love song. Not like this, though. So she started to write a new song. And maybe it wouldn't be a big hit—okay, nothing she'd done yet was a BIG hit, but she was growing a following—but it would be true. Sometimes getting it out onto the page was all she needed. Jim /was/ so cool. She /liked/ them so much. And she wanted them to know it.

There are also a few that got bookmarked into All The Soup because they didn't quiiite meet the collection requirements (ie, a garlic soup character wasn't a main character for 50% of the fic, but were something like a b-plot), but were close enough that I wanted them in the collection as a whole!

For sure!! For All The Soup, things have been bookmarked *mainly* because the author doesn't have collection invites open, or didn't approve it (which is something I very much understand/respect)! And some authors might trust some collections/make their own, but not want them in others, etc!

Oh! Also, if fics are collection items, it shows in the fic directly that it's in the collection (screenshot here of one of my fics showing which collections it's in) - and you can go to the collection directly from the fic. This isn't the case if it's bookmarked into the collection.

3) Collection bookmarks, on the other hand, function the same way any other bookmark does - they just show up both in the collection's bookmarks, and the individual user who made it's bookmarks! Authors have no say over whether bookmarks get made, but they also don't impact the fic in any way.

- so they don't allow their fics in collections (out of concern they might get made anonymous/unrevealed without consent).

However!! It's really important to note that you can take a fic out of a collection at ANY time if this happens. So authors don't/can't lose fics to collections like that :)

- a) not appear on Ao3 (be "unrevealed", so that authors can post gift fics before they get given to the giftee), and b) appear anonymously.

Understandably, some authors don't want collections to have this control over their fics -

2) If your fics are in a collection, the collection has some limited control over how it appears on Ao3 - because collections are used to run things like gift exchanges, they have the ability to make fics -

From an author standpoint, collection items means:

1) requires your approval - your items can't just get added to collections without consent! Collection owners can invite fics to collections that have "collection invites open" in settings - but the author still has to approve it.

Ie, bookmarks can't be filtered by things like kudos, word count, hit count, etc. So if you're looking for a specific length of fic, it's far easier to find in main collection items. I try and have as many fics as I can in All The Soup be items for this reason, they're a lot easier to search!

Absolutely!! The main functional difference when you go looking at a collection's items (ie fics in it) vs bookmarks is that collection items can be filtered/ordered in all the ways that main Ao3 filter tool works - whereas bookmarks can only be filtered by tags, date updated, and date bookmarked.

The other accomplishment this week is that I now have a new Ao3 pseudonym just for archiving All The Soup bookmarks 😂 I'm going to be slowly shifting all my archiving bookmarks to it, because dear lord I miss having bookmarks that were actually functional for me to find fave fics in

But for real, a helpful way to tag is not just "does this character show up in the fic," but "does this character have a meaningful and notable role in the fic." If the answer is no, then don't tag them.

(The number of times Jim is tagged in fics where they don't even *appear* is fucking... ridiculous. I love you authors who tag properly. Authors who tag for a character that has literally three mentions you are the bane of my archiving and reading existence.)

Also going to use this as a reminder to not tag characters who barely appear in your fics. It's tag inflation, and only serves to piss off people wanting to read about them

On the flip side, massive kudos to the people who tag background ppl as "Jim Jimenez (background)" you are absolute heroes

Hooray All The Soup!!

Right now there are 15 fics that have been invited to the collection (ie, where authors had their invites open) - I will keep the invites up for 2 weeks, then delete them and bookmark the fics instead!

Authors are absolutely not obligated to approve the invite! But if you want to and need help -

All The Soup exists because it's so fucking hard to find fics that are actually *about* the garlic soup characters, since they're tagged SO often in fics where they're background characters, or where they rarely appear.
